I note that the leonids in this picture, too, are very green, with no trace of blue. Their color is similar to the color of the leonid in APOD November 22, 2012. Admittedly, the APOD of November 19, 2012, is just possibly slightly blue-deficient, or at least possibly more so than the APOD of November 22. The stars in the APOD of November 19 almost all very white, whereas in the APOD of November 22 they are typically bluish-white.

Brightness could play a part here. The stars in the APOD of November 19 look quite bright, whereas in the APOD of November 22 they look rather faint. Some photographers and some photographic films "burn out" the blue color of bright bluish stars, while they enhance the (possibly more intrinsically not so blue) blue color of faint stars. The APOD of November 19 could be an example of that kind of astrophotography.

I'm just speculating somewhat idly about the cause of the strikingly green, totally non-blue color of these leonids.

For all practical purposes, the position of Leo in this image is the same as it would be had the image been taken at the same time and place this year- above and behind the camera.

Apparently the two naysayers who think this was faked didn't read that these photos were taken in 2001, so the position of Leo now has no bearing.

There are no more than 28--anymore than that- they are seeing things that are just not in the photo!!
It would be possible to get that many if it's a composite of six into one!! And the stars in the sky just may be Leo as it kind of looks like a backward question mark on right of center. I assume a digital camera was used such as the Canon Rebel which I wish I had one. Good job there, Mr. Santini!!

There are exactly 30 separate meteors imaged. Stephen Yenzer

I too counted 30. And since there were naysayers about the authenticity of the picture, I launched Starry Night and found the sky illustrated by the pic.
You can see it here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/9654016/apod%2 ... v%2019.jpg

The window capture of Starry Night contains all the info for anyone to recreate it.

Lovely picture. At first I thought it was a picture of this year's Leonid shower, and I was bummed, because it has been cloudy and rainy here in Northern California, so I missed the Leonids. But I well remember the 2001 Leonid meteor storm. I was coming home from a late night of <ahem> socializing. It was cold and clear, so I walked up the hill in the park near where I was living. The sky was full of meteors! I swear I thought I could hear the brightest whooshing through the atmosphere!

I count 30 meteors in this picture, including the smoke trail. If others see 31, that's more proof that I don't have the sharpest eyes anymore.

I counted 31 including the faint almost ghostlike one in the bottom left center almost hidden by a slightly larger one.

WCorvi wrote:You guys have been had! This photo is a fake, for several reasons. The most obvious is that all the meteor paths are parallel; they would have to be 90 degrees from Leo for this to be true, yet Leo only rises a couple hours before sunrise now (thus being only 30 degrees from the horizon). Further, forget the meteors - can you identify even ONE star in the picture? NO? That's because they aren't real.
Fake? Strong language. They do say it's a composite!

Yes, between 4 and 5 am. This image has a 38° wide field (slightly rotated with respect to the true horizon) and is centered in Puppis. Many stars and asterisms are identifiable. The center of the field is 150° from the Leonid radiant.

The lines are not parallel, but diverge from the shower radiant. However, if you image a narrow field far from the radiant, that divergence is subtle.
View of Monument Valley is looking due south on U.S. Route 163.

The meteor paths are nearly parallel because the radiant & anti-radiant of the Leonids are both approximately 90º away.

If the meteor paths were horizontal it would be ~ midnight.

If the meteor paths were vertical it would be ~ 6:00 AM.
(Not Photoshopped  )
As such it appears to be approximately 4:00 AM on Route 163.
