It took me a while but I noticed it too. I emailed the APOD guys and I was sent to this web site. It looks pretty good.

I sent email to the IAU home page.

That picture could end up in text books. Its lousy science. It seems all the astronomy discussion groups just want pretty pictures.

IAU Demotes Sun to second-brightest object in System

I downloaded the latest eye-candy posted as the August 28 APOD, but spent a few too many seconds admiring it before I started to wonder:
Why are the sides of the planets facing away from the Sun brighter than those facing toward it?

Inquiring minds want to know!
