Re: the 'Blue Moon', that's not quite right, as this Sky & Telescope article reveals:

The June 7 APOD referred to a "blue moon". This expression comes from the fact that May 2007 had 2 full moons during the month. This is relatively rare and hence the expression "Once in a blue moon". On average there should be 13 full moons per year therefore usually one month each year will have 2 full moons.

Good point BMAONE23! I was thinking of multiple exposure on same film!

I would think it has to do with the order in which the images were taken. they would all be full moon imgaes but the next image in the series would overlap the previous image in the series with the later and then final images being predominant.
But it could simply be the order in which the images were imposed over each other.

I am wondering if the APOD showing the moon reportedly rising is actually setting? Each new image appears to overlay the old,,, so why is the overlay direction towards a setting moon instead of a rising moon? Am I all mixed up or???

Wonderful image though,,,, just has me a bit confused.

Jerlong has a good point! Why doesn't the higher moon overlap the lower one instead of vice versa! :?

Multi-image Moon Picture and Moon Size

by gcvisel » Thu Jun 07, 2007 3:14 pm

This was a neat picture to address the misconception that the size of the moon at moonrise and moonset "appears" bigger than when is is fully up in the sky. It is obvious that this moon is not growing or shrinking!

It does say right in the description that the moon is rising....
Cool pic, though, huh?

Multi Image Moon Rising??? Or Setting??

Howdy,

I am wondering if the APOD showing the moon reportedly rising is actually setting? Each new image appears to overlay the old,,, so why is the overlay direction towards a setting moon instead of a rising moon? Am I all mixed up or???

Wonderful image though,,,, just has me a bit confused.

Tunc Tenzel, the person that takes these images, is one great photographer! :D I really enjoy when he/she is featured for the APoD.....
