The rectangular object is described as a rock in the foreground; yet is is so perfectly squared off that it reminds me of a box, or crate. Could the stretching of the photo possibly cause this? Doesn't seem likely. Could it actually be a crate left out in the valley? :?

Glad to see this image on APOD! "A Dark Sky Over Death Valley" deserves the APOD honor much more than the Earth at Night APOD of Aug 22, 2004. Let's showcase the grand night sky, not the light pollution.

Pictures of the Milky Way are always grandiose! I hope they find ways to keep some dark areas in the USA. Is there a hint of the Northern Lights giving some glow over to the left of this panorama? :)
