Re: APOD: A Crumbling Layered Butte on Mars (2016 Oct 05)

Can you imagine a human colony on the surface of this planet? Growing crops, to feed themselves ... somehow? With no water to speak of? Their energy sources being ... what? Not solar power, from a very very distant sun. No water on Mars? Au contraire... There's plenty to be found, but it's locked u...

In the center of the scree are more than ten rocks whose surface have multiple round nodules. All the other rocks have flat planes as would be if cleaved from sedimentary formation. What are the nodules? Sedimentary conglomerate? Did Curiosity have a close look to be sure they were not signs of lif...

If you live in an area that is currently close to active fires, and the smoke is evident in your skies, the orange color could be from smoke. Wildfire smoke always makes both the Sun and Moon seem redder

Re: APOD: Gaia: Here Comes the Sun (2016 Sep 26)

Going by the video, between 10 secs to 20 secs, it appears our Sun (Sol) is part of a Globular Star Cluster. Is that really the case? Or is it a result of insufficient data of the Milky Way so far? I think it's just marking the edge of the data. Absolutely. We're not inside a globular cluster. Trus...

The second NGC 1672 link takes you to a Youtube Video Zoom in which does resemble a Barred Spiral
Click to play embedded YouTube video.
It also looks like a double ringed galaxy with the rings offset enough to create the illusion of a bar

Bill, A simple solution would be to have a second monitor that is rotated to portrait. Not only would this provide for viewing portrait oriented images but it also makes web browsing more enjoyable as most web pages scroll in portrait direction Here is a brief description of that process http://www....

Possibly a nickel/iron meteorite remnant
Although, with the context of the other rock above it, and the strategically placed dark patch which resembles an eye socket, I am reminded of the breathing apparatus of Darth Vader
