Oops. Yes, it turns out that the adventurous photographer is not actually pictured here. So I have now deleted "pictured" from the text. That sentence was taken from a previous APOD and I missed it (repeatedly) in the editing. Sorry! - RJN That definitely clears it up! Thank you, Mr. RJN....

Glad I wasn't the only one that couldn't see something/one in the image!

Patrick60, according to the image in this link, I believe what you're asking about is one of Saturn's moons, Tethys.

I saw this in the email announcement from ciclops.org and I am in absolutely gobsmacked at the resolution and clarity. This image is my favorite: Saturn 38754 , but only because it's got everything labeled. (The unlabeled images are uber-fabulous too.) Two thumbs way up for the Cassini Team! :thumb_...

Reading Ben Cooper's description of the flight, it was definitely no small feat to acquire those images.

Billsey, my guess is it's most likely an imperfection that wasn't removed from the image. Maybe someone will come along and let us both know for sure.

As well as being known as the Hamburger Galaxy, another popular name is the Sandwich Galaxy. I'm getting hungry! :lol2: Really wonderful image today. And Ann, I enjoyed your analogy/metaphor. It's always interesting to me what (and how) others see what they do in some of the images. :saturn:

madtom, I'm not sure what you mean by 'all the bits rotating and slipping'...? The video shows planet Mercury rotating. What exactly do you mean by 'slipping'? This is a pretty awesome simulation. I really like how the perspective changes, and the addition of the Hubble images makes it more 'real-looking'.
