Re: Introduction

I notice that some of the videos numbered 2 are earlier in the list than those numbered 1. What is the correct order for watching the items? The Distance scales topics as an example.

Re: APOD: Unusual Vein of Deposited Rock on Mars (2011 Dec 1

Rivers of lava tend to start at vents and peter out with increasing distance from them as the magma cools and solidifies. They also tend to have raised edges, or "banks", due to solidified material on the surface of the flow fragmenting and being deposited to the sides, looking at the shad...

Re: NGC 7331 Galaxy looks bent (APOD 22 Oct 2008)

Been a while since I looked at this thread, it wandered into some directions I did not intend, pictures/graphics/photographs. Got a note that there was a new post, and thought, after reading through, that a documentary I watched earlier this week was seriously relevent. It makes you wonder if many o...

Re: APOD: Asteroid Vesta Full Frame (2011 Aug 02)

The grooves surely indicate that Vesta was once part of a much larger and/or geologically active body. Great stuff this.

Re: APOD: APOD is 15 Years Old Today (2010 Jun 16)

Congratulations.

APOD is my home page, has been for many years. I like to start the day with a bright, up-beat interlude before the rest of the world has a chance to push me, once again, down to its level.

APOD: NGC 602 and Beyond (2008 Oct 25)

NGC 602 - what a cracker! (APOD 25 Oct 2008)

Todays APOD is just incredible! The clusters, the nebula, the galaxies, it has it all. The tantalising link is superb.

a 'photograph' is an image recorded on a light-sensitive film or plate The word, coined by Hershel, comes from the Greek Phos and Graphis, which reduces basically to "drawing with light" - if you research the terms you can see how it is derived. Thus a "photograph" is an image m...

Er? A photograph is an image formed by light falling on a light sensitive surface. Since the raw data of the image under discussion was obtained by light falling on a light sensitive surface, it is a photograph by definition. It has been processed to bring out existing detail in the photograph to be...

NGC 7331 Galaxy looks bent (APOD 22 Oct 2008)

This galaxy look deformed to me. The centre section seems tilted relative to the outer lying blue spiral arms.

Are there other galaxies in the neighbourhood that could have peturbed it?

not everybody has iTunes installed A lot of people are a bit wary of installing iTunes. Conceptually, it should be safe and fine, but there have been many, (probably anecdotal), reports of it installing various hidden shims etc., probably to do with DRM, ( ), which have had performance effec...

However, computer simulations are not at all unprecedented. In fact, the very first APOD was computer generated: Yes, I know, but at least that was astronomy related, and it would be difficult to see how a real picture of such a situation could be presented. My point is, and has always been in the ...

I will add my usual "what has this to do with astronomy" comment. It is not even a picture, rather, a computer simulation.

No. Ignoring non-astronomical images, like todays for example, does not send any message to the editors. They want to know what pictures are popular, fine, positive feedback on good ones, but which ones really stink?
