I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about that in this case, Chris. Thanks for replying though.

Re: APOD: Moon Meets Morning Star (2012 Aug 24)

Chris: I get it, but the photo was of a particular perspective from South Korea (and could be seen in Eastern Asia), which was on the 24th for the locals. Just seems respectful when talking about that particular event, which was location specific, to use the local date.

Re: APOD: Moon Meets Morning Star (2012 Aug 24)

Actually, the Moon-Venus occultation took place on the morning of August 14th, by Korean time.

Re: APOD: Around the World in 90 Minutes (2011 Nov 21)

There is something similar around 3:50 that I mentioned earlier. It is very strange because it really seems like it is some kind of water/cloud reflection, but I don't know how it could track the ground like that. Yes, it's the same kind of thing. I hadn't caught that one. My only explanation is so...

Re: APOD: Around the World in 90 Minutes (2011 Nov 21)

What is the circular light in the upper left of the screen from about 3:20 to 3:25? It can't be something on the Earth itself, since it's keeping pace with the ISS. It almost looks like a spotlight shining from the ISS but I can't imagine that's what it would be. Anyone know?

Re: APOD: Time Lapse Auroras Over Norway (2011 Mar 28)

Thanks bystander, I was able to find and see the amazingly beautiful video. It's just that that's not what shows up on the APOD page, yet no one else seems to be having this problem. Weird!

Edited: Figured it out! "Old tab fatigue." Opening a fresh tab did the trick. Thx bystander!

Re: APOD: Time Lapse Auroras Over Norway (2011 Mar 28)

Am I the only one who's getting the Cassini fly-by time-lapse movie on today's page instead of the Norway aurora?? The text description below it describes the Norway clips but the movie itself is the Cassini-Saturn fly-by that was posted a few weeks back. :-?

Re: Where to get large hires NASA images

I was finally able to find all of these and more! And they have thumbnail browsing and hires formats, too. It takes a while to find what you're looking for, but they've got a huge library of images here: http://nasaimages.org Many thanks to the people who replied. Maybe this thread will help someone...

Re: Where to get large hires NASA images

If you have the ability to print in large size color yourself Like an HP4000 printer then here are many large size images http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/katalogos.php and contains 820+ pages with 16000+ images BMAONE23, thank you for the link. Their images all seem to be close-ups that focus on spec...

Re: Where to get large hires NASA images

Thank you, bystander. Much appreciated. I was only aware of one of those sites. They look promising for many images that can be helpful to my project. Unfortunately, Hubble doesn't seem to "do" Earth or the Moon. So I still need sources of high quality pics of the Earth and our Moon, if an...

Where to get large hires NASA images

I have been using NASA's public domain images on the web for a while. I now want to use them for some printed material (for a project that I believe is within NASA's usage guidelines). However, I'm having trouble finding many of the NASA images that I already have in lowres or small size images. I n...

Hi Bystander, Yes, I watched from around 9:15 until around 11:00 (maybe ever so slightly sooner), when I finally had to go inside and thaw out. Judging by the symmetry of the slightly brighter bottom edge, I probably went in when it was near or just after its closest to the midpoint of its journey t...

I have a question about last night's eclipse. For a change we had spectacular weather here in Toronto. It was an extremely cold (I believe "f***ing freezing" is the technical term) but crystal clear night. I had expected the Moon to turn a deep red or orange, but instead it only looked lik...

Kjardine, I've often wondered why the folks behind various scifi series never thought of that. I think you're probably right about the special viewing ability on a starship bridge. We'll probably have individual ocular instruments (like Geordi on ST-TNG) that will do the same thing, too. I see what ...

Hmm... Not exactly your days of Polaroid snapshots, is it? Although... in terms of what's involved in putting the image together, it's probably not that far off! Fascinating stuff. I guess what I'm left still puzzled about is what that nebula would look like if I took the local space bus and ...

Thanks for replying, Bystander. It sounds like what I was hoping APOD would do would still have to be approximated manually (if that's a good word for it). From what you're saying, it seems there are very few actual raw color images. Would that not have changed with digital photography, though? I ca...

Re: Suggestion for APOD

BMAONE23, you've got the idea. APOD did something similar not long ago (can't find it now) where there were 4 pics of the same thing, each showing a different colour and then the 3 colours put together to form a full colour picture. It was interesting but not quite what I was referring to. Hello Peg...

Suggestion for APOD

I don't know if this will get back to the folks who decide what to choose for the APOD, but I'll post it here anyway. :D I would love to see an APOD that shows the difference between an untouched versus touched up pic of a galaxy or nebula, for example. So often we see that the pic is a "false ...

Thanks very much for all your replies! :D Wow, I guess that sun must really be whipping around that black hole, to create enough motion to counterbalance the gravitational pull. Do all the stars near the centre of a spiral galaxy move that fast around the centre? I guess they must be or else they'd ...

Question about black holes

I was left confused by the 23-Oct-05 APOD and its explanation. I was referred to this BB to find an answer. (Thanks Robert!) The APOD explanation talks about confirming the existence of a black hole at the centre of our galaxy by measuring the effect on a star that recently came within 17 light-hour...
