well, Einstein has put forward his answer: you feel gravity when you move wrong way. I can't help if it's not good for you. Newton's equation for gravitational force was replaced by Einstein with set of field equations to show how spacetime curvature works under the influence of massive body. The e...

Qev Quantum particle behavior is interesting phenomena. Physical laws stand on very limited observations (A snapshot in a life of universe). Years gone by, the gravity may well be defined differently. Big Bang, if it really did happen, may turn out to be only a small bang in a very large picture, ob...

Harry, Nice links on gravity, the first one and the second one. I was recently reading a book on Quantum Particle behavior and relativity. It discussed a thought experiment and some other goofy stuff. The basic conclusion of quantum particle behavior is that they behave the way they do because there...

Harry, All theories are personal thoughts. If they get accepted by peers as explaining natural phenomena accurately than they become scientific theories. Once they have backing of experts, they become popular. A scientific theory can get replaced by better explaination. In this scenario what you hav...

Why?

Orin and Harry,

My theory on Harry's Why was also a theory of unknown and as youcan see even that can be challenged, Oh God!

Harry,

It's difficult to not bring God into discussion.

Harry, The progress of astrophysical theories have shown time and again that one behaviour could be explained in more than one way. Example is gravity. The ultimate theory - the theory of origins - such as BBT obviously has a political bias. In this scenario the evidence will somehow be explained to...

Nice one Harry.

BBT is only a theory based on Hubble's constant which was based on doppler effect. Even if BB did happen, the universe could still be much larger than what BB accounts for i.e it was only a small bang in a much larger picture.

Life

nstahl, SETI's search for ET life continues. Galaxies obviously house many billion stars. There is vast interstellar space between stars. Consider that a Sun like star with planet like Earth is part of one of the spiral arms of the galaxy. If life has evolved on such a planet, the high-energy electr...

Re: religion and language

Ipaq, In terms of Hinduism, my understanding is that it was a flourishing culture in the era of 7000-5000BC; but it was an oral tradition and history and all their knowledge was orally remembered. So when a group of people, who had a written language, wandering in their explorations, encountered th...

Your corrections noted. Yep, afterall it's about the geometory.

I think, there has to be another law. "Entities with better geometory has better power."

That explains woman power too.

Yup, Gravity is both a force and a field. Depends which theory you invoke to explain what behavior. M82 has a black hole. Interestingly, M82 has been under scrutiny for a long period of time. I was recently reading a book written in 70's, which describes black holes with lots of skepticism and descr...

Is gravity a force or a field?

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0604/M81_M82_schedler_c80.jpg I don't know how far is M82 from M81 but one thing I don't understand is the effect of gravity or the field at vast distances. With such a strong gravity how come a smaller companions can remain intact and the larger galaxies show ...

The Newtonian equation that you have used tells us that the force between two massive objects depend on their masses. However, if you drop a nail and a feather, both fall on earth at the same time. That was the paradox, which made Einstein come up with GTR. Actually, there's no paradox there with N...

dogel, I don't want to pretend to be an expert on this nor, I believe there are many experts in the area of what happens inside a black hole. However, a black hole, as per GTR, has a gravitational field that may vary time to time depending on the activities within. Newtonian physics looks at gravita...

Iron, I thought, is made in the core and that's when the star becomes unstable as gravity is unable to keep up.

Dave H, I neither am inclined nor against the idea of Big Bang. However, if my memory is not playing up, the name "Big Bang" was actually coined by Fred Hoyle, an opponent of big bang, to in fact ridicule the idea. However, the name stuck. Probably, the unscientific name is also a reason w...

Time is a relative term. There is no absolute to measure it against. If you believe in big bang and want to consider t=0 at the moment of big bang, you still have no absolute. The next question is what happend before big bang.

This might seem like a crazy idea but, I wish if it was possible to disturb Saturn’s rings externally, in such a way that gravity takes over and the failed moon of the planet actually takes shape? That is turning rings into the moon? I believe there are some larger chunks in the rings. I do understa...
