Re: APOD: The Upper Michigan Blizzard of 1938 (2024 Jan 21)

I have seen many pictures of the Moon, and can merely look up in the sky typically 15 days a month and see the Moon with my own eyes. That doesn't mean that APODs of the Moon aren't worth looking at. 😊 I do not understand the relevance of that to what I said except I was commenting on the question ...

Re: APOD: The Upper Michigan Blizzard of 1938 (2024 Jan 21)

I missed seeing this one before now but in answer to the question, can another blizzard do this, I have seen other pictures like this of snow that high. And I have seen pictures of water that high, and snow contains less water than liquid water. Therefore even as a science story the picture is not v...

This can be verified using tools. What we see in the image is a true difference in colors. Very often the difference between...

I think no one has explained what the requirements are that causes our brains to be confused. What are the features of this image that causes the misconception?

This particular cat is being partly illuminated by red light, so that one of his ears looks red. I think most people's brains understand that. imagine a stuffed toy, as black as a typical black kittie. Send it into space and make it orbit the Sun. When the light from the Sun reflects off the orbiti...

Also, when I copy the image and paste it into Irfanview then copy a portion of each square (a portion of the background) and paste each into a new image then they look the same color.

I used Color Picker online. (I saved the image locally then uploaded it to the site.)

Re: APOD: Moon Setting Behind Teide Volcano (2023 Dec 03)

Is occurred to me that the distance from the camera to the people on the volcano is 16 km, but there's also a few more km of atmosphere that the light from the moon would have to go through before reaching those people! Except whatever it is that I see, it is only near the land and only rising from...

Is there a fire on the peak? There appears to be smoke rising from it. I do not however see the smoke when the Moon is not behind the peak, therefore it is probably an illusion.

For example, the Matterhorn is more accessible from a direction not visible in most images of it. Then I noticed ...

Yes it is interesting that Cairo is very lit up and that there are many lights down the Nile from Cairo.

It is also interesting that Taiwan and Hong Kong have many lights. North Korea is very dark.

Over 4000 planets are now known to exist outside our Solar System.
Why has that dropped so drastically? I thought there are (believed to be) billions of stars, most with planets. Or that statement is wrong.

I think this is the most confusing explanation I have read. It starts out by saying something about the Milky Way and I got the impression it was going to say the teeny tiny amount of light here on Earth illuminated the entire Milky Way.

The public is afraid of things like microwaves and even sometimes radio waves, because someone, somewhere decided to make the distinction that it's not light, and that's a mistake. I don't think so but that is off-topic for here so I won't comment further. Everything from the way cell towers work t...

Bear in mind that this image was taken with radio telescopes, so 'light' doesn't come into it, its radio signals that were being analysed. One also wonders about the assumptions that were made about how radio waves operate around black holes and/or are generated, that should provide further/future ...
