"...it sounds like the vortex as a whole is 5000 miles in diameter, not just the opening, which would obviously be smaller..."? To measure a vortex by it's volume, rather than it's opening, seems like an odd and difficult way to measure. The caption reads "The storm is slightly larger...

Probably only amonia, other traces gases, and helium. I doubt that the vortex goes anywhere deep enough to get to layers that are hydorgen in a fluid state.

For that matter, is the interior of the vortex a vacuum?

It's been a long time, but I believe that Saturn's clouds, at the surface are VERY dense and under high pressure. Upward of 1 million bars! As I remember, most of the atmosphere is made up of hydrogen and helium, with amonia toward the top. If the diameter of the opening is 5000 miles, and the walls...

can on Mars

No, it didn't enter any or our minds that it was space debris/junk. It is just a rock , with the light in just the right direction, to make it appear to be a crushed tin can. Just like the "face" on Mars, it's just a rock under proper lighting conditions. Under different light, there is no...

Global warming on Venus

well, of COURSE we are! According to Al Gore, AMERICANS (not the industrializing Chinese or Indians -only 3.4 BILLION of them comparred to our 300 million AMERICANS ) ONLY AMERICANS are responsible for global warming. Not the dozen volcanos that are active around the world EVERY day belching million...

Life on Mars

So THAT is where he moved to!

Can hardly blame him... all those itiotic tourists traipsing through his back yard... taking pot shots at him... all he wanted was to be left alone...

Can on Mars

The Mars Crazies (Marzies? Like Lunies?) will have a field day with this one. I can see the headlines: Ancient Earthlings Leave Litter On Mars! Al Gore will be blaming Americans for the total destruction of the Martian ecosystem. The EPA will demand from Congress $100 billion to clean up the mess Ji...

Tin Can on Mars

Maybe we can get the "Face on Mars" fanatics to start a crusade that this is proof of life on Mars!!!! (Would be great fun to watch!) http://home.earthlink.net/~danasebay/beaglecrater_opportunity_big_t...

Fabulous detail

Very impressive. Items of note: Large rock at very bottom left of photo shows little erosion. Where did it come from? Also note the mini "avalanche" in the far center of the crater. note that the rocks show less erosion. Probably left over from a large ejecta rock sitting right on the edge...

Apollo photos

Excellent pictures. I can't tell you how much I wanted to be there... But again, that is not an answer to my question. The Moon Mosaic shows a heavily retouched phot of the mood, with the stars visible right next to the surface. A camera will expose for the bright surface and the stars are not visib...

The moon and star field

Hi Harry, Thanks for responding, but you didn't answer the question. The moon mosaic gave us a view we can not get from the earth -- stars that are not washed out by the much brighter moon -- beautiful -- like something from an SF movie. My questions was, would a view from space look lie that? From ...

Colorful Moon Mosaic (APOD 7 Sep 2006)

Fabulous picture!

I have not had the opportunity to see the moon from the vacuum of space.

Does anyone know if the moon would look like this without the atmosphere dispersing light?

GRO J1655-40: Evidence for a Spinning Black Hole

Explanation: In the center of a swirling whirlpool of hot gas is likely a beast that has never been seen directly: a black hole. Studies of the bright light emitted by the swirling gas frequently indicate not only that a black hole is present, but also likely attributes. The gas surrounding GRO J165...
