Re: How do they do it?!
I would like to know how they get the shuttle up on top?!! I suppose using a similar installation to the one they use to get it off again . :) Have you been to the wikipedia link? : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Shuttle_mounting_point.JPG I love the instruction they've painted on the connector...

Is that a bubble or a bow shock wave that I can see? :
You can see it better in the larger picture, which is rotated from the APOD version:

Re: Scientists should know grammar.
The author wrote "lays" for "lies"--a common mistake; but accuracy is important across disciplines. :? Thats a fair point, but if you could show precisely where the mistake was it would make it easier to correct. A link to the page like this would have been helpful: http://antwr...

Yeah, I'd agree with this point. Occasionally there are pictures where a scale would be really helpful.

Re: epoxy adhesive
I also thought this might be a water droplet some time back. I found many images of the droplets over the whole mission and they were unchanged. They all look like clear epoxy adhesive, and it is easy to see that water or ice would not last for years under the heat that is present during some of th...

'Cat's Eye Wide and Deep' (APOD 29 June 2007)
Hi Everyone,

Does anybody know what the brown curved feature above and to the left of the nebula is?
Is it a separate feature or actually part of the nebula?

btw, there's a great image in Case' link. The Wikipedia page is quite an eye opener. Although saying a country uses metric doesn't quite show the full story, as it doesn't say how much of the population of that country abide by their 'official position'. We're supposed to be fully metric in England...

Re: Areas
That may very well be true--except that the area of a sphere is not equal the the area of a circle with the diameter of the sphere. If this is the level of thought that people on this forum exhibit, there's no point in wasting my time in trying to ask questions on it. Oh please . Don't you think as...

Re: Request for metric values in explanations.
Most computers come with a calculator. Many even have a 'convert units' type of function. Also check out http://www.onlineconversion.com/ one mile -- 1.6 km 570 feet -- 175 m 300,000 ton -- 272 million kg 130 feet -- 40 m 26,000 miles per hour -- 41,839 km/h 9 miles across -- 14 km But of course sc...

Actually, i meant I liked the word 'codswallop'. The picture is nice too. Cod's 'Wallop' is the eggs from the Cod fish. It's used as a general term (here in England at least) to describe anything that is useless, rubbish or undersirable. As opposed to Caviar, presumably. Sounds good too, especially...

Re: APOD of the day, June 12, 2007 - Shuttle Plume
When I downloaded the APOD fo 6/12/07 and viewed it full size, I noticed a white spot in the upper left corner. This portion of the picture did not show up on the web page view of the picture. The spot appears in an L shaped opening between the plume trails. Can you identify this object? http://ant...

Using red and blue glasses the 3D effect of this APOD is superb. It is probably the best such 3D effect I've ever seen. Thanks to Laurent Laveder for an excellent APOD. :D Yeah, me too. :) Although I occasionally seem to be able to make it look 'inside out'... like I'm staring across a fish bowl an...

I look at APOD every day and am amazed at the immensity of my power. Of all the life forms on this planet, this little ape can sit at his desk and inspect the cosmos from a distance that would take a billion lifetimes to travel, even at the speed of light. I can comprehend all that is mine to compr...
