neufer, See this page from the Rover website. Shows several pictures featuring 'blueberries' in "near true colour". They are not that blue! http://marsrover.nasa.gov/gallery/press/opportunity/20040318a.html Early in the missison, "Cornell University astronomer Steve Squyres, the miss...

Infinite Improbability

bystander, Doesn't the lack of proof become a "no" by default? Or am I taking science too literally? Isn't there just a level of probability or improbability depending on whether you're a glass half empty or half full kind of person. Calculating it accurately either way is the 'don't know...

Life off-Earth

OK this is a little OT but I'm now wondering about life we may have taken 'off Earth'. Did the lunar modules still contain a breatheable atmosphere and would it still be sufficient to support microbial life left aboard by the astronauts? I wonder if there's a little bit of green mould sitting on the...

No eclipse visible

Nothing here in Yorkshire, England. It was well overcast last night and raining this morning.
It's a great shame as we've just had a string of cold clear nights. It will have to be 2015 then! :)

Thanks Andy. I'd like to invite you to come see the auroras from Alaska but I think it would be a lot easier for you to visit perhaps Norway. Easy hop to Copenhagen, Oslo and then maybe Tromso. Perhaps you have a direct hop over to Iceland. You will get them in the UK but it usually takes a pretty ...

Thanks for that. I can relate to the frustration of not being able do the science at the very time that it would be so much desired. I for one would like further insight to the crater. Did the meteor arrive from the upper right as there seems to be no cliff? Why does it appear the whole crater bottom collapsed leaving those cliffs in the back of the crater and also in the fore as evidenced by the shadow? If you regularly visit L...

Volcanic activity on Mercury?

Yep, I see it now, not inverted at all. Could this be the result of two impacts with the second filling in the crater of the first? There seems to be two centres to the rays. Is there any evidence of volcanic activity on Mercury? I was wondering if this was originally a volcano that received a dire...

Stars in the Milky Way

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap080118.html I think I've read, or heard at least that all resolvable stars that we can see are in our own Milky Way Galaxy, and that we cannot resolve a star in another galaxy as they're simply too far away. Does this APOD mean that there are occasional exceptions ...
