Re: APOD: Juno Approaching Jupiter (2016 Jul 01)

Re: Poll: Recent Submissions #8 -- Same Earth, Different Sky

While all the photos are good, for me they all fall into the category of "now let's take a break from pictures of the horsehead nebula." Call me a stick-in-the-mud, but I feel astronomy photos should emphasize stars, so I voted for ESO VLT (UT4) Telescope Finding the Galactic Center with i...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

How about that other thing in the sky that's just about the same size as the Sun? Since NGC 4921 is a member of the Coma Cluster of Galaxies, refining its distance would also allow a better distance determination to one of the largest NGC 4921 has been informally dubbed anemic because of its low rate of star formation and low ...

IAU Demotes Sun to second-brightest in System (28 Aug 2006)

IAU Demotes Sun to second-brightest object in System I downloaded the latest eye-candy posted as the August 28 APOD, but spent a few too many seconds admiring it before I started to wonder: Why are the sides of the planets facing away from the Sun brighter than those facing toward it? Inquiring mind...
