Two-Armed Spiral Milky Way; real photo (APOD 06 Jun 2008)

This 'map' of the Milky Way is impressive. I think it would be great to have a real pic of the Milky Way disk. If we flung a camera payload straight up through the disk as fast as we could move it, I wonder how many centuries it would be before we could get a picture looking back at the disk of the ...

Fave APODs: Spiral Galaxies

There are so many stunning and profound photos available here that I can't pick one favorite. But my favorite CLASS of photo are the spiral galaxy portraits. I gaze at a beauty like NGC1300, the Whirlpool, the Pinwheel, or a dozen others. Then, I try to imagine the scale and possibility of the life ...

Living in the halo of the galaxy (June 19)

I think it would be awesome to live in the halo. I'll bet the night sky would be one huge pinwheel of stars; I guess it would be at least as bright as our Milky Way at night only seen face-on. Maybe it would be much brighter if you lived right near the disk rather than farther out at the end of the ...

craters are an optical illusion

Hey, I know what Daisy means....when I look at photos of carters and other planetary formations, it often looks as though I'm looking at a negative. The features that are raised appear to be sunken in the surface. This is of course a trick of the lighting and shadows, but I wonder why my eye is tric...
