Aha! You are right. No one can find the new moon. Not yet

To my eyes it looks waning. Or didn't I find the right moon after all?

Re: APOD: Rotating Moon from LRO (2018 Mar 18)

The Moon seems totally locked to the Earth by gravitational forces. Does that mean, that this locking happened before it became totally solid? If it were solid and rigid and its gravitational center just were located nearer to Earth, it ought to end up rocking back and forth. Isn't that what Mercury...

Re: APOD: M13: The Great Globular Cluster in... (2017 May 12)

Wonder how it would be to sit inside that cluster? The sky would be crowded with suns of different sizes. Is it hot? By the way, could there be any planets to land on, or do I have to stay on board my vessel? The whole globular cluster has to rotate in some way to prevent the stars from collapsing ...

Seems like the winds only blow over water. Over land it is dead calm.

Re: APOD: Flyby Image of Saturn's Sponge Moon... (2015 Jun 0

Could it be that Hyperion has once been a comet that has become captured by Saturn? It 's spongy structure is the remains after ice has been vaporised away, perhaps after many sun passages.

Excuse me for bringing it up, but how about all the dung?
Edit: Answere myself. At last they will have some use for all those craters. Didn't think of that.

Turning off the muzak improves the experience.. To a hyperborean, like me, it looks alien with the moon upside down.

Re: APOD: A Supercell Storm Cloud Forming over... (2014 May

First of all, I turn off the lackadaisical "music" to concentrate on all fascinating details of cloud forming and whirls. I wish for a possibility to play those time laps movies in even slower motion. So much happens in all parts of the pictures.

Re: APOD: Saturns Moon Dione in Slight Color (2012 Nov 05)

While I don't have a problem with a large impactor, could it be possible that the smoothness of the leading side is due to ablation from more smaller impactors? It seems to me that with the ring formations around Saturn, there should be a higher amount of small debris and enough small impacts shoul...

Re: APOD: Saturns Moon Dione in Slight Color (2012 Nov 05)

I don't think that dust falling onto Dione could hide any of the craters except the smallest. And if dust had fallen heavily enough to hide them on one side, an area that got less dust would show evidence of hidden craters underneath , like a chair shows up as a smooth bump after a very heavy snowf...

Re: APOD: Saturns Moon Dione in Slight Color (2012 Nov 05)

To me it looks like the leading face is scarred by craters too, but it has been powdered over by dust. Dione belongs to Saturn and there may have been other rings before our time. I think Dione's leading face has met with relatively fine dust that has done cosmetic to it hiding it's embarrassing poc...

OK. Thank you all! AFLAC duck is a thrilling theory and so is Energizer bunny, but after all I lean towards "a glitch in the film" as the most probable however trivial explanation. No big sensation this time either. :D

Its in the film then?. Yes looking thoroughly in the foreground there are some similar shapes, but smaller. At first glance I came to think of a shot story by Arthur C. Clarke: "The sentinel". However that one was in Mare Crisium, quite far off to say.

Thank you for answering.

Copernicus from Lunar Orbiter (APOD 16 June 2007)

The 40 years old picture of today shows the Copernicus crater. link
What is the formation standing like a chess piece on the horizon slightly to the right of the crater centre? It must be enormous and has an unlikely shape.

Greetings
