Re: APOD: Equinox: The Sun from Solstice to... (2019 Sep 23)

Thank you Mark. I had photographed this image from the rooftop of our apartment building in Bursa, Turkey; located at 40° 11' N, 29° 4' E. -There are already inevitable messages about the duration between sunrise and sunset being longer than 12 hours on equinox days. This is further complicated by h...

Re: APOD: Mars in the Loop (2018 Nov 08)

Mars really is closer to the Earth in the middle of the loop, so it is looking the brightest. In fact, this past Mars season was a very favourable one for planet observers, with the red planet coming to a perihelic opposition on 27th July and shining at mag. -2.8, its brightest since 2003. To better...

Thank you Robert. Yes, I photographed this panorama in the morning of 29th January 2018; from Steam Vents in Kilauea. From March 2008 to May 2018, there was a lava lake in Halema'uma'u crater, which produced smoke and water vapour. This vapour-smoke mixture was lit by the lava lake below, making it ...

The Moon is just 2 degrees above Mercury, seen as a crescent with earthshine. It was 2 days before new Moon, as the left half of the panorama is from the morning of 26th January. The right half is from the evening of 24th January with the middle part after midnight, 25th January. I originally planne...

Re: APOD: All Planets Panorama (2017 Feb 25)

Thanks Ann! Actually that faint looking dot is indeed Mercury. It was at mag. -0.2 back then; I had to shoot it with the intervening clouds and the twilight had already begun. The brighter light above Mercury is the Moon, which was a thin crescent with earthshine.

Re: APOD: Summer Planets and Milky Way (2016 Jul 23)

Thank you all. Al_from_Ottawa, this panorama consists of 20 panels of 30-second exposures I shot with an EOS 6D camera at ISO 3200 and a 24 mm f/1.4 lens at f/3.2. I used a hand driven equatorial drive for the sky exposures (first 15 of them), and shot the last 5 for the foreground without tracking....

Guest is right. It had taken much less time for me to edit the panorama from the same spot 6 years ago, as the light pollution was less back then:

Actually, the bright star far left of the halo is Canopus. Sirius is lower in the sky and just next to the left hand side Magellan telescope dome.

Even the cloudy Chilean skies are better than most, apparently. :)
