WOW! Great point! Could it be that we can't photograph stars from the Moon because of the Moon's (very meager) atmosphere? Perhaps the photo you have found shows Orion because it was taken from an angle that does not "look" in a direction toward the Moon? Just a thought. BUT now that you'v...

In reply to the first two messages above, I second the motion and must say, "I can dig it!" I don't like seeing the little button where I am SO used to not seeing one. But, having read up on"Diggs" it's a pretty cool concept that gives every news article and everything it's appli...

"can anyone tell me why the stars are rendered pinkish.

Just a guess, but my first impulse was to think atmospheric and light pollution. Especially those pesky mercury vapor streetlights. They may help keep the neighborhood secure, but they sure can mess up an observing session, photos too. Check out the International Dark-Sky Association http://www.next...

Very original photography concept. I've never seen such a panoramic image before. I've visited APOD everyday for years. I have never inspected any other image longer than I have this one. Well, maybe the Hubble Deep Field. Where I live, light pollution only allows us to see the major stars of any co...

Golden Comet Holmes (APOD 03 Nov 2007)

Halloween brought around some friends I haven't had much communication with within the past year. As I sat out in the yard looking for trick-or-treaters, I was able to treat five interested people to the sight of this novel comet through 10X50 binoculars. The great part is that all of them were able...

APOD 28 November 2004 Doomed Star Eta Carinae . http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap041128.html I remember reading in Astronomy magazine that the width of just one of the gas/dust lanes in either of the lobes is about the size of our solar system. That gives this image scale as to it's true size whic...
