Take a large block of ice, and a propane torch.

Pass the torch over the ice quickly.

Did the entire block just melt?

Star spikes are sometimes added to images to "enhance" thier artistic value as well. I wouldn't do it, but I know its an option in some of the image processing software.

I doubt they want to contaminate the area more with hydrazine byproducts any more than they already have.

Get out a camera, and find a darkish setting. Put a really bright object in that setting, and take a short exposure.

Wow, everything around the object is really dark! You must be in space!

Or you just need to realize how cameras work.
