Re: Submissions: 2017 August

Eclipsed moon rises through the ancient Greek temple of Poseidon at Sounion, Greece.
Today all major archaeological sites in Greece are open to the public, to enjoy the full moon. The moon rose at the beginning of a partial lunar eclipse, so the sight was even more breathtaking.

Re: APOD: Reunion Island Eclipse (2016 Sep 03)

Honestly I wonder why this picture is still up even if the description was modified. When I go to APOD's website, I expect to see a wonderful astropicture taken by a talented astrophotographer who spent money, time and energy to get this single shot, not a computer artist. I completely agree. This ...

Re: APOD: Reunion Island Eclipse (2016 Sep 03)

I absolutely dislike this image, the appearance of the partially eclipsed sun looks totally wrong and not natural looking at all. Once it is said it is a composition, i guess there is no problem. But how such a dark moon silhouette was captured during an annular eclipse? The brightness of the sun cr...

Re: APOD: Mars at Closest Approach 2016 (2016 Aug 09)

The video looks like what would someone expect for the apperture and camera used and the low altitude of Mars, but the date written is June 18, 2016. The problem is that the details visible on the video are much less than those that appear on the APOD video. In my opinion, it is impossible to get su...

I feel sad of the personal attacks and insulting words that are written and i think the moderators should do something about this. I have never seen it happening before in this forum.

Re: APOD: Mars at Closest Approach 2016 (2016 Aug 09)

I agree, had a look at the video again and the amount of detail is totally unbelievable for a 14inch scope. Also, the features look absolutely the same on each rotation.

You can have a look at amateur astrophotographer mages of the recent Mars opposition here. Chose the best and compare. Very heavy processing can be another issue, as overprocessed images can look odd. http://alpo-j.asahikawa-med.ac.jp/Latest/Mars.htm And the webpage of Chris Go with very high resolu...

I agree that something seems to be quite wrong with this, as it looks completely unreal. Here are two more videos of the same amateur. I await for the opinion of more astrophotographers. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0E1HqlrXOlM https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pt0onh8DoD0

Re: Submissions: 2015 December

I swear i hadn't planned this! Visited Paris for Christmas without special photographic equipment, just with a 20x compact camera. The Christmas full moon had other plans, despite the fact that the sky was mostly covered by clouds. When i arrived at the bottom of the Tower, the sky cleared up and th...

Found this stunning image of the beautiful red sunset over Athens, Greece in 3 November 2015, due to reflections of the sun rays to massive altocumulus clouds. The phenomenon was observed in Europe, but also in parts of the US and draw attention to thousands of people who took photos. Here is the vi...

Yesterday's view from Sounion, Greece. Re: Gallery: Venus Transit 2012

The sky was not as hazy as expected that would allow for naked eye viewing of the transit at sunrise. There were also clouds intervening. Despite low altitude and strong turbulence the aureole was captured during egress. Skywatcher ED80, Canon EOS 450D, C11, DMK21BF04 firewire cam. Elias Chasiotis, ...

Re: Submission Gallery: Lunar eclipse, 2011 December 10

Philopappou hill, the opposite hill to the Acropolis of Athens offered a good perspective to capture todays eclipse above the Parthenon. Totality was invisible in Greece, as the moon rose after the end of it, but the moonrise of the partial phase was very beautiful!

Blue flashes are extremely rare and there are not many photographers who have captured them.
The thin moon is also impressive as it has an illumination of only 0.5%.
