Re: Should the Asterisk retain its theme as a starship?

If you want to make changes to the theme, you might consider changing the subtitle from "APOD and General Astronomy Discussion Forum" to "Astronomy and Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) Discussion Forum." I've never thought of astronomy as a way to watch generals, but if you're...

Re: APOD: Alnitak, Alnilam, Mintaka (2011 Jan 21)

I asked: In the right side of the image, about halfway between Mintaka and Alnilam, there is an object that appears as a smoke ring, light grey in color. Additionally, there appears a counterpart to this ring to its upper left at the intersection of forty-five degree angles from Mintaka and Alnilam....

Re: APOD: Alnitak, Alnilam, Mintaka (2011 Jan 21)

In the right side of the image, about halfway between Mintaka and Alnilam, there is an object that appears as a smoke ring, light grey in color. Googling "smoke ring nebula" produces an object of that name, but it does not resemble the item in this image. Additionally, there appears a coun...

Re: APOD: The ISS from Above (2010 Mar 03)

++little snip++ The only part of Antarctica that stands a chance of not being over the horizon from the ISS is the Antarctic Peninsula, which might just be visible in the far south when the ISS is passing near southern South America. That said, however, I am unable to find a single image of Antarct...

Re: APOD: The ISS from Above (2010 Mar 03)

When we run out of imagination for what to do with the ISS (which is probably pretty much already), why not send it out to the Moon for use as an orbiting outpost for Lunar exploration? Add propulsion and guidance and you have a bona fide spacecraft. It has lots of room for long-duration stays by c...

Re: APOD: The ISS from Above (2010 Mar 03)

I vote for Antarctica. When the image is viewed in a graphics program that allows viewing the big image at 1:1, and the orientation is changed, glacial flows travelling in two directions become veryapparent. Looks like the Ronne Ice Shelf is above and to the left of the ISS and the Ross Ice Shelf is...

Re: M51 Hubble Remix (2009 Dec 26)

:?:

Is today's image orientation ninety degrees off to the left?

MGC 5195 is supposed to appear to the right, but seems to
be at the top...

Just wondering.

BTW, whatever resolved with the triple sunrise image?

Re: Irregular Galaxy NGC 55 (2009 August 12)

:?:

Is the NGC 55 image posted to APOD today, a composite made up of a variety of spectral elements and reconstituted to the various colors shown? Or is the image a literal view in the visible light spectrum?

Thanks for illuminating me.

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

I viewed the images posted by RJN and the time stamps were not visible in them. However, if the orientation with time stamp is the same as that presented in the APOD posted images, i.e., offshore platform to the left of center in image, internal window pane reflections or multiple window pane relect...
