Re: APOD: Full Moon, Full Earth (2015 Aug 07)

Since people so "enjoyed" the cross-eyed 3-D image of Pluto from yesterday, here is a 3-D movie I made from the images taken by NASA's Deep Space Climate Observatory. ;)

Re: APOD: Carina Nebula Dust Pillar (2015 Feb 08)

Anyone know where this image lies in the wider panorama at http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap090524.html ? Here you go. Since this dust pillar is not in the Hubble Carina Mosaic, it helps to take an even wider view and overlay Hubble's images on top to show where each is positioned. Here is a widefield i...

Re: APOD: M45: The Pleiades Star Cluster (2013 Sep 18)

Great image of a beautiful cluster. The dust is interesting, but I like the image enhanced to bring out more colors and a darker background.

Note similar colors of our moon in a slightly adjusted APOD image from Feb 16 2006

Here's what it looks like if you supersaturate the existing colors:
(I also rotated it 90 degrees.)

Re: APOD: QR Codes: Not for Human Eyes (2011 Oct 04)

What a bunch of cry babies! These comments are far worse than the image, which is really not that bad. People should stop to consider the thousands of beautiful and thought provoking images provided by APOD for FREE! This image is reminiscent of our attempts at communicating with aliens (as mentione...

Re: APOD: Verona Rupes: Tallest Known Cliff in... (2011 Apr

How difficult would it be for a climber to scale this cliff? Consider the specific potential energy change, (g h) where g is acceleration due to gravity and h is the height. For the cliff on Miranda, this is (0.079 m/s2)(20000m) = 1580 J/kg. On Earth, this would be equivalent to an elevation change ...

Re: APOD: NGC 6384: Spiral Beyond the Stars (2011 Mar 22)

And of course, it is meaningless to consider what it looks like "today", except perhaps as philosophical speculation. Like all astronomical objects, "now" is when we observe the object, which is equivalent to when the light left it... regardless of distance. Clearly, the speed l...

Re: APOD: NGC 6384: Spiral Beyond the Stars (2011 Mar 22)

NGC 6384 seems to be about the same size as our Milky Way, and if it's more or less the same type and age, then the numbers should be about the same as in the Milky Way where there are about 7 new stars per year and about 1 supernova per century. So in 80 million years, there'd be about 560 million...

Re: APOD: NGC 6384: Spiral Beyond the Stars (2011 Mar 22)

In the 80 million years it took for its light to reach us, much has changed about this galaxy. Are there some reasonable estimates for how may stars were born and died in this galaxy in the last 80 million years? How many went supernova?

Re: The Spotty Surface of Betelgeuse (2010 Jan 06)

As pointed out by Stormculture, the average density of Betelgeuse is 3e-8 g/cc. That means the density at the "surface" of Betelgeuse is much less, probably even far less than the density of our sun at it's surface (1e-9 g/cc). So my question is: What force holds this very tenuous matter i...
