Re: APOD: Galaxy and Cluster Create Four of... (2015 Mar 09)

Let's say I am a student in your advanced geometry class. How would you show the light path of this discovery ? Or would you be the devious professor and give it as a final examination ? Yes. Although I can understand why it is hoped/expected for a 5th and central image to appear, I do not understa...

For the same reason that most of the moon walking images show no stars - the exposure latitude of the recording medium.

Considering that for so many millennia comets were thought to be harbingers sent from god(s) to foretell the fate of nations, it is difficult to imagine a scene showing more complete indifference to humans and to their concerns than this image of dark cliffs rising from the surface of this small wor...

Interesting choice of calibration marker. Until that coin there were no regular issue United States coins which contained a presidential likeness - as the founders did not wish to continue the European tradition of having the likeness of the monarch on coinage, for the president was not a monarch, a...

Astounding image, even if does not fit my imagined view of what a "dirty snowball" should look like, and given that there are not aliens milling about wondering what caused that bump. So much better seeing one's taxes being spent for exploration rather than destruction. The landing certain...

Very nice - though it goes by a bit fast: As does life, one supposes.

And, yes, the "scheduling" of the next equinox was as amusing to me as to some others.

All in all, a good start to the day.

Thanks

Mesmerising

Though did keep feeling that I was going to fall off the planet, as the moon was clearly upside down and going the wrong way.

Beautiful. Though I am sure the photographer may have been at first dismayed by the presence of the clouds, it comes together so well with a moon image having foreground, midrange and distance. Also, one of the few examples of HDR imaging which does not seem contrived and jarring in effect. Very nice.

Interesting in general, and as I am just getting into time-lapse photography, to me in particular. Watching the telescopes mysteriously point about, with the sky wheeling majestically behind them, was completely engrossing. The soundtrack adds nothing but distraction. Something Baroque or New Age ma...

What is most amazing, and - this being the internet - what is most likely true, is that this is a cat: Look at the shape of the head - especially the shape of the ears and snout.

It is fitting that this Little Planet projection is of an airfield, for Saint-Exupéry, who wrote and illustrated the haunting novella The Little Prince was an aviation pioneer. ... the Bermuda Triangle

The "Bermuda Triangle" does not, in any meaningful way, exist. As Mr Kusche's research showed quite convincingly in his 1975 book the whole idea was invented by writers for men's adventure magazines in the 1960s. The triangle is no more real than new-age "energy" (what sort of en...

For, if flying saucers are as common as many believe, this should clearly be named the Flying Saucer galaxy.
