It reminds me to the spectacular photo of Phoenix Lander during descent to Mars taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2008:

The dark spot appears quite unusual as clouds are white and the oceans are blue in this color corrected image
What is unusual with white clouds, blue water and a dark grey shadow?

Re: APOD: Shuttle Enterprise Over New York (2012 May 09)

The remarkable thing about this photo for me is that the photographer got the photo absolutely orthogonal . In other words, the horizontal and vertical lines of the buildings line up exactly with the edges of the photo. Anyone who has done any architectural photography will tell you that this can b...

Next May = May next year This May = May this year I think the explanation is okay as it is, but I'll pass your comment along. Sorry, but this is not correct. This month is March, so you can say "this March". Only in a May you can say "this May". Next mean the next May from today...

Re: APOD: The Umbra of Earth (2011 Dec 15)

APODFORIST, I think Earth's shadow (at the Moon's distance) is about 6000 miles across. During a solar eclipse, the Moon' umbra on the Earth shrinks down to just a few miles across - that is, it loses about 1000 miles on all sides. The angles for the Earth during a lunar eclipse are about the same,...

It looks like a colored thematic map (of geology or nature of the ground or so - on the left an area with streets and cities, on the right a natural area with rivers)

Re: APOD: Apollo 17 Site: A Sharper View (2011 Sep 08)

There is at least one set of initials on the moon from Apollo 17: While Jack cleaned up inside, I drove the Rover about a mile away from the LM and parked it carefully so the television camera could photograph our takeoff the next day. As I dismounted, I took a moment to kneel and with a single fin...

I wonder why NASA don't make those far distance photos or videos ... They open the minds for what is going on much more than focused tele shots.

Re: APOD: The Last Launch of Space Shuttle... (2011 May 18)

The full resolution image clearly shows a bit of fire coming from the shuttle's left engine. I wonder if this is normal? All three engines show "a bit of fire". Just have a look a bit downwards and you will see the other two fires also. The one you detected is the fire of the shuttle's up...

Why someone would need infrared detecting eyes to watch Saturn from Titan? Would the visible spectrum of Saturn's light(reflection) eliminated by Titans atmosphre?

I have watched the eclipse live in southern Germany - it was an unforgettable experience. For the 2 stars I used STELLARIUM to find them out. It shows the same planets which are mentioned in the picture description: Jupiter on bottom and Saturn on top: http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/1224/bildsch...
