Stormy weather

This summer is very unusual for the Greek climate with lower than average temperature and many rainfalls and passing storms. Even nature is much greener than usual because of the high rainfalls happening overall into 2015 and from a photographic point of view, it creates some really stunning images....

Summer solstice sunset

Today was the summer solstice and just two hours after the precise time, it was setting time for Thessaloniki Greece. Here is a very carefully calculated and timed image that had many difficulties to be solved. Luckily position calculations worked and weather cleared at the right moment: the sun is ...

Galactic Meteora

Lyra and the MIlkyWay are setting behind the marvelous landscape of Meteora Greece. The ligthts on the right side of the image are coming from monasteries that are built over the rocks many years ago and I believe they provide a better feeling of time passing (or not passing...) through the years. h...

Moon is rising over the city of Thessaloniki

In this wide field image, the full moon is rising over the second largest city in Greece, Thessaloniki. I was planning to make this image last year because I saw the orbit of the moon coming out of the city's landmark the White Tower and had to wait patiently so it would come at the same spot. Weath...

Full Moon rising

A beautiful full Moon is rising over the city of Thessaloniki. The image is a composite that shows the different layers of the atmosphere as seen on the color of the Moon's disk becoming more white as it glides higher to the sky. Time distance between the images was 200secs. http://www.stellar-explo...

Holy Sky!

Busy sky over a holy place. The image shows the peninsula of Agion Oros, in Chalkidiki Greece. I was located at the summit of the mountain Athos at 2030m shooting for over 14 hours to get enough data and create this composite that shows a double pass of the International Space Station, many airplane...

Colorful flash spectrum at C3 from Faroe Islands

We had very difficult weather in Faroe Islands but we got lucky enough to see the totality under thin clouds. It was interesting though how the clouds produced a colorful background of the Sun's flash spectrum at Third Contact. http://www.stellar-explosions.com/wp-content/uploads/FalshSpectrumA.jpg ...

Solar system in motion!

In 2014 we would see three consecutive perigee full moons and I've made a project to try and capture them in different sites. The purpose was to combine the sky and Earth and maybe extend the borders of nature outside our planet. I had to travel hunderds of kilometers into my home country Greece aft...

100 year after the first world war anniversary.

I'm changing the title of the image because I've noticed that last August was the anniversary of the 100th year after the first world war and the monument on the image is devoted to the people that fought at the time. If you look closely at the fence of the chappel, it is made by war bombs and barbe...

Super or Perigee Moon

Last Saturday the New Moon would be aligned precisely with the temple of Poseidon in Sounion Athens. I drove many kilometers from northern Greece to make this image and had to pass between a big bushfire close to the area of the temple. Luckily calculations and the sky was perfectly clear to see the...

Natural power generator!

A few days ago, we had a very intense electrical thunderstom in Thessaloniki Greece. I went out to capture this amazing phenomenon which gave us more that 2000 thunders in two hours! I was both scared and inspired at the same time from the intensity of the storm. This year we had a lot of storms lik...

Starship Enterprise

Space is the final frontiere! The image was made from Mt. Voras at an altitude of 2450m and -7 degrees Celcius. The ski lift found on the mountain reminded me the shape of USS Entersprise against the shape of our Milky Way galaxy seen under pristine sky conditions. It is an exposure of 25 seconds wi...

At Mt Paiko, a plastic water pipe and its previous position on the snow, makes a path to the Andromeda galaxy that can be found in the center of the image. Spring is here ...

Supernova explosion in another Messier galaxy

2014 seems to be an explosive year since already we have two supernovae explosions happening in the very familiar galaxies M82 and now M99! Here is an image that shows the second explosion:

Re: Submissions Gallery: Solar Eclipse, November 2013

This year's total solar eclipse was both unique cause it was a Hybrid/Total one and difficult to go to since shadow would hit land very close to the equator in Africa. I choose to go to Gabon, because the duration there would be the biggest possible for an observing place on land with 62secs of tota...

Zodiacal light over a Titan

Mt Athos is placed at Chalkidiki Greece, a peninsula with three legs into the Mediterranean sea. This makes it the perfect place for dark skies since there is no electricity there. The name of the mountain was given from an ancient greek myth that puts Titan Athos shooting a mountain from Thrace to ...

The sky is kind enough to shows us signs of the hidden treasures it keeps! Zodiacal light and the Milky Way are met in this interesting X shape and all we have to do is just look up and enjoy. I actually was fooled by the false dawn created from the intense Zodiacal light and didn't expect it to be ...

Looking at the International Space Station

This weekend we had some really nice ISS flybys. Here is one made at Sunday evening from the port of Thessaloniki. I had to yell at people so they would notice this -2.6mag moving object just above their heads. I wonder how people sees UFO's all the time and miss such a bright slow moving object. ht...

ISS over a traffic jam!

I found it very interesting and also annoying that I was the only one among thousands of people who was passing by, watching ISS passing above the center of Thessaloniki Greece at -4.4mag! A very difficult image, since the street and car lights are producing way too much light pollution (and not onl...
