Re: APOD: The Gaia Stars of M15 (2019 Mar 28)

Clicked on the image to get the larger version. Wow! Quite a few twinkling stars are easily seen. I was wondering how many actual stars are represented in the gif. M15 has over 100,000 stars according to one of the links. The gif has about 7 million pixels so a large number of actual stars could be ...

The "use a zoom tool" link is an overwhelming view. Looks difficult to call interstellar space empty. Maybe intergalactic now.

Re: APOD: Moon Struck (2019 Jan 25)

I happened to be taking a Moon pic about 4 minutes after impact. Just a point and shoot camera so no moondust cloud visible. The lighted portion of the moon in my pic (and eyeball) is at about the 11 0'clock area. The APOD pic shows the lighted area at 3 - 4 o'clock. My location is in mid-USA (N35.1...

I like the composition. Martin Junius put a lot of thought, effort, and time in his work. I had favorable weather and did get a few pictures of the eclipse, but nothing like his.

Re: APOD: InSight's First Image from Mars (2018 Nov 27)

I was watching NASA TV showing the JPL Control Room during the landing. Twenty or thirty extremely tense folks that could do nothing regarding the landing activities. After it landed and they could breathe again, they went to work. There is already a good lander/landscape shot on the NASA site. http...

This telephoto gives no indication how close the photographers were actually standing.[/list]
The "Launched" link in APOD has more details and pics including info that the "blockhouse" is 500 feet from the launch pad.

Re: APOD: The First Rocket Launch from Cape... (2018 Oct 01)

Looking at the info in RJN's link, I wonder if those camera men knew there had been some sort of failure on 6 of the 7 previous launches or attempted launches.

Re: APOD: Asteroid Ryugu from Hayabusa2 (2018 Aug 22)

Just semantics, but it seems odd to say the Hayabusa2 is hovering when it has an orbital speed of something like 60,000 mph. More like it is orbiting (flying?) in formation with Ryugu.

Alec, Thanks for your posts. Quite informative even for a bystander like myself. Hopefully Mother Nature created a neutron star long ago and its neutrinos are just about here.

Re: APOD: Dark Slope Streaks Split on Mars (2018 Jul 18)

Czerno O: The streak is somewhere in the range of 2100 feet long and 1050 feet wide at the widest point. I downloaded the JPEG/JP2 black and white map-projected from the site listed in JohnD's post. That map is apparently 5 km across, but it shows more than today's APOD. Scaling the streak based on ...

The "Not a photograph" link https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/milkyway_lund_big.gif is a 1950s drawing version of this photograph. It does show quite a few stars and other astronomical info, including a co-ordinate system. Those folks did a good job also.
