The larger APOD image (click on the image a couple of times) is very busy. Lots of light sources with diffraction spikes, galaxies everywhere, lensed (stretched) sources abound.

Does anyone know which part of the earth are we seeing in that sunlit crescent?? Or which side is north? According to info about the picture, it was taken on Dec. 17,1972 23:00 UTC. I looked for the comet the evening of Dec. 16th. I probably saw it, but never could identify it. The planets were obvious and I knew about where to look. I was in a fairly dark area with a set of binoculars and a monocular, 10X to 15X.
