Re: ESA: Rosetta: 100 days to wake-up

* Info about the Egyptian original at Wikipedia and here One does wonder what the Pharoah Khufu (Cheops) would think about this use of his name, four and a half thousand years on... I suspect that he would feel that it was a fitting tribute to his greatness. http://www.touregypt.net/images/touregyp...

Re: The Moon's Orbit

Another viewpoint would be that the Earth would eventually fall into a fixed-faced orbit with the moon, as the moon has already been forced into a fixed-face orbit to the Earth. Of course, as Chris and alter-ego stated, this would/could take billions of years. Source: http://www.spaceanswers.com/sol...

Re: The Moon's Orbit

This may not be the perfect spot for this question. If, in the distant future, the moon orbits significantly closer to the earth, what will be the effect on total lunar eclipses? It seems to me that the moon, if it's plane of rotation does not significantly change, will always pass through the eart...

Re: Planetary Society blog post on EPSC and Rosetta

This is the link to Emily Lakdawalla's September 11 post about the Rosetta team's presentation at the European Planetary Science Congress. She wasn't there but Pamela Gay was and there are some interesting tweets from her. http://www.planetary.org/blogs/emily-lakdawalla/2014/09111456-new-rosetta-vi...

Re: Introductions: How did you become interested in astronom

I became interested 12 years ago when my dad bought a 12" Meade telescope. Overtime we have built a dome in his backyard, added so many accessories to take pictures and long-term images, that it has become a pretty penny. The kicker for me was when I looked through the lens and saw Saturn's rin...

Re: APOD: A Total Lunar Eclipse Over Tajikistan (2014 Oct 05

I wonder if it's true that refraction is the cause of the light that makes the Moon glow red during an eclipse. Just by watching sunsets, and noting the shape of the disk of the Sun during a sunset, it is clear that the deflection angle caused by refraction in the atmosphere is a fraction of the Su...
