Re: APOD: Tycho's Supernova Remnant Expands (2016 Jun 01)

You don't suppose Brahe was catting around? You mean it was not the honorable cut of a sword that robbed Tycho of his nose, but the gangrenous effects of syphilis? Say it wasn't so!!! Ann I think his loss of face  was much more noble the his suspected ultimate demise but probably just as pain...

Re: APOD: Comet PanSTARRS and the Helix Nebula (2016 Jun 05)

I wish there was an antonym for serendipitous to describe today’s APOD but I can’t find one. Have to use a quote from Katori Hall, “Serendipity always rewards the prepared.” I'm not sure that it always does but the rest of us got the benefit today! Thanks for the time and effort that went into today...

are those streams or jets? Streams I suppose but in the end another fantastic Pugh. Thanks once again! 8-)

Tyco had a nose for astronomy and kept it to the grindstone working to improve the accuracy of measuring the heavens. If anyone finds it, nosing around, there are people out of joint to find it. Nothing would smell as sweet especially for those needing one . :content: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o013...

Re: APOD: Stars and Gas of the Running Chicken... (2016 May 31)

Honestly, I photographed it and I still cannot see a chicken- maybe the AAO folks were missing their KFC when they named it that night? If it were discovered now it would most likely be named the Gungan or Krumm Nebula :) Glad you liked the image though, cheers! Andy Your Big Chicken isn't running,...

I can't speak to the "Stars" but the" Gas of the Running Chicken" Nebula is evidence of an extremely large chicken nearby and could prove – they can! So keep looking Andy and keep up the good work.

And looking at tomorrow's teaser -maybe stars can to? :ssmile:

Re: APOD: Cat's Eye Wide and Deep (2016 May 28)

The morphology of planetary nebulae catches my eye. Their shapes must reflect in why we see such a variety of shapes as the projection of the gaseous outflow is seen from different angles. Too bad we live in the " blink of a cat's eye " Funny-Cat-Photos-Kitten-s-One-Eye-Closed-Is-It-Blinki...

Re: APOD: IC 5067 in the Pelican Nebula (2016 May 26)

The features of newly forming stars in the Pelican Nebula were documented some time ago. The research must have progressed since the early 2000's as the trunk of knowledge starts to open. Could what triggers the process help us develop our own treasure trove of energy :?: The people at Cold Fusion p...

All kidding aside from earlier but what a change from Martin's usual APOD images. Search Pugh. Excellent write-up too on how it's possible to create such a landscape. I've been a fan to his deep sky photography and now I'm a fan of more down-to-Earth images too. Thanks!!

Re: APOD: Milky Way and Planets Near Opposition (2016 May 21)

This is very akin to a previous APOD which may have had a similar difficulty to find the right words to title such a great photo. Opposing, without going over the top, and questioning the description that the Milky Way and our solar system may be nearing its closest proximity, does this title do the...

Yes, Fred, but in the mirror universe, do bananas bend the other way? I wanna banana! (For scale - how big is this blasted thing?) And, do mirrors there reverse only up and down and not left and right? ;) With a slight curve its facility seems a very a "peeling" place for research . :ssmi...

The answer to why an asymmetric universe is unsettling may one day be discovered to be as simple as a mirror universe. Its odd features may be stranger than we can imagine; even with the best Star Trek writers.

Re: Does Matter absorb space time?

Even though I have read a fair amount about dark energy and dark matter as a layman I don't recall that its amount was known to be changing versus time in the universe. The significance of that tickles something in my brain that I am unable to scratch. Perhaps it would have made Fritz Zwicky itchy t...
