Re: Blackholes: Accretion Vs Expulsion

No, it is just bending spacetime. The curvature of space by gravity, if I understand things correctly, is why something sent off in any random direction will curve, (like planets orbiting a star) instead of just continuing in a straight line. And BH's, like all other massive bodies (planets and sta...

Re: Blackholes: Accretion Vs Expulsion

I posted this in another thread but it might fit better here .. if a Black Hole is devouring anything that comes near it .. isn't it devouring space time itself? And if so, as it devours space time, it must be drawing matter closer to itself. What think ye?

Re: Does Matter absorb space time?

http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/space/photos/10-incredible-images-of-black-holes/universal-mystery You might say the accretion disk is eating matter, not the Black Hole, and that empty space lies between the disc and the hole. I suppose. No. Matter is present in the accretion disk, and disappears ...

Re: Does Matter absorb space time?

No, an insignificant amount of mass compared with the mass of the galaxy, and over billions of years. There is nothing that allows material to generally get closer to the center of a galaxy. A black hole only collects mass when there is some mechanism to bleed that mass of angular momentum. One is ...

Re: RAS: Oceans Galore: Most Habitable Planets May Lack Dry Land

Sounds reasonable. Point taken. And the lack of plate tectonics on Mars may have many reasons, but might we guess that it has something to do with a relative dearth of underground water? Ann Ann, this may interest you .. there is no lack of plate tectonics on Mars. http://newsroom.ucla.edu/releases...

Re: Does Matter absorb space time?

When I look at a spiral galaxy, it appears to me like a drain, with much debris swirling to it's inevitable end, being sucked up by the huge super massive black holes at the center of it, like a huge water drain, all the debris, not really moving relative to its medium (the water), but just being s...

Re: Does Matter absorb space time?

One must also first get inside the box and be very familiar with it in order to think outside of it. ;) Ah yes, and who is it that qualifies a person to be inside the box .. very often the very person who can't think outside the box, and who has gained his position of authority by NOT thinking outs...

Re: RAS: Oceans Galore: Most Habitable Planets May Lack Dry Land

Your reference to the Genesis account of earth's creation was daring, Daniel, and your revelation that without high elevations of mountains etc all of earth's dry land would be deep under water was refreshing. But I don't wish to make too many waves here Warming 3 , and don't want to heat up the wa...

Re: RAS: Oceans Galore: Most Habitable Planets May Lack Dry Land

The Earth doesn't really have a lot of water at all. As compared to the total volume of Earth's rocks, sure. But, as potential water worlds are concerned, it is note worthy that if the rocky surface of this planet was completely spherical water would cover the whole planet to a depth of about 2.5 k...
