Re: APOD: The Dance of Venus and Earth (2020 Jun 03)

Ann, it is not yet understood. When I was interested in the lower conjunction, I searched which region of Venus faces us, and the answer lies in the toponymy: Alpha Regio and Beta Regio (first regions perceived by radar images from Earth). There is however a difference of 4 hours and 5 minutes betwe...

Re: APOD: Hoag's Object: A Nearly Perfect Ring... (2019 Nov 27)

The extended (Chandra) X-ray emission (shown below) from the Cartwheel galaxy to its small spiral galactic neighbor sure suggests a head-on collision. Note that the small spiral galactic neighbor looks like it might also be reverberating as a small ring-galaxy. So is the small ring galaxy in the Ho...

Re: APOD: IC 1871: Inside the Soul Nebula (2018 Nov 28)

Why are there no Proplyds in the images of the Soul nebula (or the Heart) ? Is it because the Perseus arm is too far for such images ?

Please no, don't shut up. I came on this page hoping for your comment, and the fact that you led geckzilla to explain a bit more was interesting.

Re: APOD: Lunations (2018 Sep 12)

Earthshine is missing, isn't it ? Our displays are incapable of simultaneously displaying Earthshine and the illuminated part of the Moon. There's far too much dynamic range. It is possible, of course, to distort the brightness curve in such a way that both are shown, but presumably they chose to s...

Re: APOD: Rotation of the Large Magellanic Cloud (2018 May 16)

So glad about gaia's data. However, one of the sentences seems to be outdated information "The LMC [...] is a spiral galaxy that has been distorted by encounters with the greater Milky Way Galaxy and the lesser Small Magellanic Cloud." Recently, I read some articles about the past encount...

Re: APOD: Catalog Entry Number 1 (2018 Mar 15)

Do you know the stories of these first ? I only know that M1 is because Messier had mistaken the Crabe nebula for the Halley's comet. (And that this location is close to where was Uranus when Herschel discovered it.)

Re: APOD: The Complete Galactic Plane: Up and Down (2018 Mar 13)

That fifth sentence is a dooozy! Sorry, it was poorly expressed. The text in brackets is about objects in the lower part of the image that we dont see from the northern hemisphere. (and I mentioned the omega centauri in the sentence about the center because it is the most recognizable object of thi...

Re: APOD: The Complete Galactic Plane: Up and Down (2018 Mar 13)

rodentooth, the center of the Galaxy seems hidden by the mountains on the right. The bright spot under the mountains to the right is probably omega centauri. Maybe the anticenter is visible on the left, under the mountains, because orion seems quite low. The mountains are almost at the place of the ...
