Originally from that neck of the woods , I was curious too. Thanks! Btw, it mentions that "based on its species and history, it will probably be there for another 100 years." Why 100 years? What will happen after that? Well, they have a lifespan of a few hundred years, dependin...

Re: APOD: Simulation: Two Black Holes Merge (2024 May 10)
According to the mathematics that I learned, 36 + 31 = 67, which is 4 (four) more than 63, not 3 more. Of course, this could easily be a matter of rounding issues. But then, if the actual figures were known with greater precision, it would have been quite possible to supply those numbers instead of...

I went to a concert in Portland a couple of months ago. Walking from the parking space I walked past a large tree and noticed this plaque in front of it: PXL_20240211_205553559 (1).jpg The city has grown all around the tree; it's flourished and become quite large. I fear this is another "artist's representation" that is not very connected to reality. So what needs to change in order to make it more realistic? Here's another picture that I like a lot better: https://asterisk.apod.com/download/file.php?id=49622&t=1 Tidal disruption of star near b...

Cassiopeia is in the picture. Look at the annotated version mentioned in the explanation. The image is a another masterpiece by Tunç Tezel. APOD should be able to spell his name correctly. Re: APOD: Diamonds in the Sky (2024 Apr 20)
It seems the link that is supposed to direct to yesterday's APOD instead redirects to the APOD for April 18. That's usually remedied by refreshing (reloading) your browser page. Doing that almost always fixes any stale link issues that I sometimes see. Not working. I don't think it's on my end. zxc...

Does the nebula from which the sun emerged still exist? Run 3 Even if the nebula has been dispersed, there would still exist highly detectable traces of the emission cloud would there not? Are you sure it isn't the ISS ? The APOD image is from 1999, and the ISS was launched in 1998. So it could have been. Today's APOD, like those on most Sundays, is a repeat, having been used on at least five occasions. It first appeared on 30 Aug 1999, just a few days after the image was snapped, wi...

The result would be dynamically unstable, and can you imagine the tides? I doubt a 3-body system of Mars, Earth, and the Moon would allow for anything more complex than algae and bacteria to survive. I knew you'd probably say that. 😊 Many planets have more than one moon. Are those systems all ultim...
