FWIW, through my binoculars, I only really see two blurries in this region of space (Triffid and Lagoon), so personally I don't begrudge him NGC 6559. Of course his telescopes do have a bit more aperture than my 10x50 binocs...

APOD: Zodiacal Light and the False Dawn (2004 Aug 25)

As a burgeoning skygazer (my 8" Dob is scheduled to arrive this very afternoon), I always appreciate the photos with the "roll-over" text and constellation demarkations. Is this something the photographer provides, or is this part of the APOD staff's value-add to the process? Either w...

Were they linking to a 40MB file at the time?

That's good to hear that this has been trouble-free in the past, though.

20 August 2004: Fred Bruenjes' 51 Perseids

Great APOD ! I have to admit that I'm a sucker for naked-eye astronomical events. I've used many APODs in the past as desktop backgrounds (David Cortner's June 23'rds Transit of Venus through the clouds being a long-standing background that constantly gets praised and questioned), and shots like the...

Like the FAQ on the "For Beginners" page. However, I'd like an explanation added as to the objects noted in the yellow squares (such as is seen in this image from the Canary Islands) as seen in the annoted photos.

Just a suggestion,

Gah, I can answer this myself. They're both Perseids, its just that I need to wrap my walnut-sized brain around the concept of the radiant and a fish-eye lens. Upon a bit more reflection I've convinced myself they're both coming from Perseus. ~The Meal (sunset in Colorado, just waiting for the twigh...

Another nice one in the Canary Islands: http://nightskylive.net/ci/ci040812/ci040812ut005907p.jpg Curious about a blip from a few slides later, however. There's a "scratch" immediately "SE" of the W designator (3pm position) in this slide: http://nightskylive.net/ci/ci040812/ci04...

Yeah, the current Mauna Kea animation shows that last Perseid very well. Very cool (although I'm hoping for no clouds tonight, personally).
