Re: APOD: A Mercury Transit Music Video from SDO (2019 Oct 21)

Why does the apparent shape of Mercury change as it transits? If we were looking at its shadow on the curved surface of the Sun then it would make sense. However as a back-lit object, it is unclear to me why Mercury should appear to have a changing elliptic outline. See attached image analysis from ...

Great picture, Boomer! :D .... The reason for the strange appearance of Betelgeuse in old astronomical photographs is that these photographs were made using blue and ultraviolet-sensitive plates, and Betelgeuse emits so little blue light that it virtually disappeared in those photographs! ... The word "violent" all depends on your point of view. On the one hand, altering the course of a hundred billion suns requires titanic forces, but on the other, the interaction of galaxies appears like puffs of smoke gently mingling over the course of a billion years.

Re: APOD: Red Nebula, Green Comet, Blue Stars (2018 Dec 20)

Here is my rough estimate of what the comet looked like through my binoculars on Dec. 18. I manually drew the comet (fuzzy gray patch in lower left corner) onto a picture of the Pleiades. Not particularly striking for my optics, but then again it was 7 million miles away! This is from suburban Cleve...
