Re: Submissions: 2020 January

It has been a very difficult two weeks with the weather and thanks to many weather fronts which have hit Greece from Russia. However, the conditions this evening were PRISTINE with clear skies, great transparency, slight humidity (vis a vis good seeing) and slightly elevated temperatures which made ...

Re: APOD: Equinox: Analemma over the Callanish... (2018 Sep 23)

Isn't this analemma done at local noon rather than 4 PM? That was my immediate reaction as well since the vertical analemma displayed must be at local noon and certainly not at 4 PM. I just checked using Edinburgh, Scotland, as an example, and local noon is around 13:06 for today (ie with the Sun a...

Re: APOD: Central Lunar Eclipse (2018 Aug 03)

Nice, sharp and informative. Well done Anthony! Thanks, Chris! The moon during totality was relatively low in the sky starting at 18 degrees during the onset of totality and reaching 29 degrees at the end of totality. However, it has been a very wet summer this year and the atmospheric turbulence l...

Re: APOD: Central Lunar Eclipse (2018 Aug 03)

Should the start and end images not be juxtaposed? I'm having difficulty seeing these images as a chronological sequence. The sequence is presented from the perspective of a ground-based observer who was fortunate enough to enjoy the eclipse. The moon gained altitude during totality (from 18 to 29 ...

Re: APOD: Surreal Moon (2014 Aug 14)

It does seem to me that all this "supermoon" business is bosh. Can the eye really detect the difference? Oh, I know there IS a difference, but in practice, one full moon looks just like any other full moon. Yes, the difference is visually significant. A casual observer might never notice,...

Alter-Ego, I have been trying for many years to gain access to the archaeological grounds during the day and also during the evening for various projects I have had in mind and, regrettably, without the slightest hint of success. Re: APOD: Apollo's Analemma (2013 Sep 22)

Let me get this straight. On a nice day, the base exposure is taken and captures both the sun and the foreground. Subsequent exposures are then meant only to capture the sun and add on to the base exposure? The gaps, I assume, are from periods of cloud cover. Actually, I think the foreground image ...

Re: APOD: A Halo Around the Moon (2012 Nov 20)

Couldn't our photographer aimed the camera up just a little bit? I'm reminded of people who cut the heads off in their snapshots. The moon was around 60 degrees altitude when the image was taken. Now also add lots more degrees for the halo itself and you are basically shooting overhead. To add insu...

Re: APOD: A Halo Around the Moon (2012 Nov 20)

I've seen the 22 degree halo around the sun accompanied by "sun dogs" or mock suns that appear on the halo. The optics of our atmosphere can be pretty interesting! I have been after a halo around the Sun for some time and it has managed to elude me so far. Patience as usual! :) Anthony.
