Re: APOD: Two Black Holes Merge (2016 Feb 12)

In cosmology we're usually concerned with two measures of distance: light travel time and comoving distance. The meaning of the first is pretty obvious; the second describes the current distance to the point where the light was emitted, considering the expansion of space during that time. The two a...

Re: APOD: LIGO Detects Gravitational Waves (2016 Feb 11)

Able to pick up something that happened in less than half a second, 1.3 billion years ago. simply amazing. I have wondered how black holes got rid of all that energy from the inflow of mass.

Art: thanks for the numbers. Had no idea about the neutrino production difference between the types of supernova. The distance factor makes even more difference though.

Did any neutrino detectors report a rise in neutrino count associated with this supernova?

Re: APOD: The View Toward M101 (2016 Jan 21)

The APOD shows the comet to the right and above M101. The "telescopic two panel mosaic" link shows the same (?) picture but the comet is to the left and above M101. Which version would I see looking into the night sky with a telescope?

Great subject. Thanks for the video and adding orbit lines for the smaller moons. Would have missed them otherwise.

Re: APOD: 50 Miles on Pluto (2015 Jul 16)

I would guess that Pluto's eccentric orbit results in a long cold, cold "winter" and a long less-cold "summer". Could result in freeze, thaw, evaporate, rain cycle of different materials throughout Pluto's year??

I now realize I thought of comets as a "kind of smooth" structure with long tail. Obviously rough, craggy, boulders, etc. Great pictures.
Way to go Philae, Rosetta, and ESA.

Re: APOD: CMB Dipole: Speeding Through the... (2014 Jun 15)

know a little about CMB, expansion, etc. Looked at the map, read the discussions. Still do not understand what the red in middle of the blue means. If we are moving in the direction of blue shifted areas, how are we moving away from the red area in the middle of the blue. Or is the red indicating so...
