Re: APOD: Active Galaxy NGC 1275 (2023 Jan 26)

So if this is called an active galaxy because "entire galaxies fall into it", I wonder what would happen if a second nearby active galaxy would fall into the first? Would it be like two neutron stars colliding? Which one eats the other?

Re: APOD: LHS 475 b: Earth-Sized Exoplanet (2023 Jan 24)

Something puzzles me. If the Earth-like planet LHS 475 b is orbiting its red star at a distance of 40 light years from the red star, than why does its sun look bigger in the sky than our Sun does to us which I believe is much closer to the Earth than even 1 light year away??

A question. In the close-up of JD 3 there is a small totally green galaxy that's even smaller than JD 3 at the bottom right corner. Could this be an even younger galaxy and why is it green? Was it really green, or that it was red shifted to green because of its distance and it was really some other ...

If I may conjecture about why the blue iron rich areas are not spread out evenly but mostly found gathered where the maria and oceans are. The theory goes that the Moon was formed early on when a Mars sized object crashed into the young Earth. Most of the Earth's light outer layers were blasted into...

Re: APOD: M1: The Crab Nebula from Hubble (2023 Jan 15)

Question: this explosion happened about 1,000 human-years ago. And now it's 10 LY-wide. Is that speed of light possible? My brain can't figure it out... First thing to note is that a light year is not a measure of time, but a measure of distance. Now if the Crab Nebula spans 10 ly, then it's radius...

Out of curiosity just how fast is this comet speeding? According to Ann's C/2022 E3 (ZTF) link showing the comet's path it states that the comet will make its closest approach to Earth on February 1st, and then according to the diagram the comet will just whiz past Mars between February 11 and 12. Re: APOD: Moon O'Clock 2022 (2023 Jan 06)

For example what do Australians make of the Harvest Moon falling at the beginning of springtime when farmers are more likely planting seeds instead of harvesting? A...

Re: APOD: The Largest Rock in our Solar System (2023 Jan 01)

Happy New Year. The headline is true as far as we know currently. But there seems to be some speculation that Jupiter may have a rocky or metallic hydrogen core that is larger than the Earth. Wiki says that Jupiter's core might have a mass 4 to 25 times Earth's mass. That means there is a larger roc...

Something doesn't add up. If the Hubble Space Telescope "Spacecraft" took this picture, and as far as I know the Hubble is still in orbit around the Earth, then how can it take a picture of the night side of the mini planet when it is even farther away than Pluto?

Re why can't you see the tyre track. First the Moon's gravity is only 1\6th the Earth. The tyres are mesh balloon tires designed to spread weight over a large area compared to the astronauts boots. The lunar buggy was designed to be light and not sink deep into the soft ground. Now there was a lot o...

Even in 22466 the command module has just 'climbed' half way up the mountain. BUT in 22467 the CM ...

I like it where it says "We are much nearer to the front edge than the back edge." So this means in other words that something 450 light years away is closer to us than something 1,500 light years away. (It makes me feel good that the money I spent on a college tuition was well spent.)

Why does the moon look so featureless and kind of dark? Since we see the planet Earth way behind the Moon and since the Moon always presents the same face to the Earth because of tidal locking, what you are seeing is the "dark side of the Moon". It is actually more featureless because the...
