The image and caption are correct in both presentation and designation. Bad BUOYS (got the name correct this time :oops: ) is an observant reader.

Nice copter gif.

Based on the given data the object should be the moon. QUOTE "During a cloudless twilight, just before sunrise or after sunset," Often we are left with out sufficient data about some of the APOD pictures and we must rely on what IS stated. Besides I think that would have been a much better...

Bad Bouys wrote; "But such a long straight ridge almost exactly on the equator is surely a provocative anomaly." Another, as you said, "provocative anomaly" is that Iapetus orbits almost a million miles out past the other moons and rings of Saturn. And, at a 15 degree off set fro...

Might you try infrared heat directed at the dome, and or lenses? Or, would it cause interference with the CCD?

It heats objects, not the air.

Could it be from two smaller bodies? That rings a bell about how big and dense an object must be before it will naturally mold itself into a ball shape from it's own gravity. I think Iapetus is about 900 miles? That is a possibility I think also, but I doubt it is the answer. Kid has a fresh idea, b...

With all most no magnetic field, Venus has an atmosphere that is way denser than Earth's, about 90 times? Just an interesting point. Then compare the numbers to Mars and see what you think? Also it is teresting that Mars showed a different atmosphere than that now showing from the earlier landers an...

Iapetus (APOD 01 Feb 2005)

February 1, 2005 APOD Iapetus That nobody commented on this APOD photograph taken by Cassini amazes me even more than the photo of Iapetus. As Cassini entered the Saturn moon system on it's initial slowing down passes it managed to come close to this body orbiting Saturn. APOD also has a picture of...

Often it is easier to moderate from the "background" instead of logging in. Or, as I often do, I use several computers and most are not set to auto log on. But, why are more moderators needed? The rules are simply stated at the top of the forum for all to see. It may be better to mention t...

ahhhhh, I was wondering why the extra Hyperion thread didn't get locked and the post or posts moved to the original one. This explains it now. Your method of locking the duplicate threads and transferring the posts works to keep it all on track. Nothing is lost and the posts you transfer give the cr...

Time travel by telescope!

Yes! Time travel by telescope is what we experience when looking out away from earth. As the light for the image is traveling at about the speed of light it does take time for us to receive it here on earth. Thus we see what was happening at Alpha Cen. about 3.8 years after it really happened.

To Zygote;
My question is, why should I go to Astronomy Picture of the Day 2001 June 28?

There is no relevant data to the icy crater there.

Now IF we had the Lat and long of the icy crater we could possibly find out more information about the area. But, alas, we don't.

The given data are as follows; The crater is 35 km wide. Located about 70 degrees north of equator. Crater walls are about 300 m high. The water ice is about 200 m thick. The image is in color, resolution not too good, and the information we really need is sadly lacking for any more research concern...

As my first post here I would like to comment on the ice crater image of APOD July 20, 2005. To get this clear of a view of water ice wouldn't it have had to form after any dust storm in that area? As there is no evidence of seepage I would have to advise that the formation was from an up welling. A...
