And this one's been trucking down I-80! Funny though; South Sioux is across the Iowa border into Nebraska and closer to I-29!

Hey Bystander! First thing that popped into my head for that APOD was the Sound Garden Black Hole Sun song!

From what I've gathered, our sun will not make it to black hole stage, right? ...insufficient mass?

Hi Orin, I remember listening to that song on my green hand held AM transistor radio. I lost the radio to curiosity at age 14… I disassembled it just to see what made it tick… first thing I thought when I saw... what I now know as a circuit board was… ALIENS! Space aliens must have built this thing… what are all these little parts? It looks like a miniature city! Say, maybe tiny aliens live there and make the radio work! So I disassembled some more… Well I found no aliens but I did learn that if you disassemble an 8 transistor radio far enough… it no longer works… I reckon I killed those aliens.

Nowadays I know better… space aliens don’t live in our small electronic devices but evidently there are a few living among us here in Starship Asterisk*!

Here’s a “road” tune that came to mind while listening to Leader of the Pack.

When I saw your post Ed, I thought, "Mitchum can't sing!" My suspicians have been confirmed.

Here's a little something to get that ear candy out of my head...

Hi Rob, Thunder Road was an intriguing movie for a kid… hot rod cars, car chases, life and death closely tied. Robert Mitchum helped write the theme song. Certainly not ear candy… more like rebel candy.

A lot of the artists I enjoy are a bit off the bubble.

I've been meaning to share this for quite some time, but now it is with a heavy heart that I do: composer Elliott Carter died yesterday at the age of 103 (article here).
I first met Mr. Carter and his music in 2006 as a student at the University of Minnesota, and his music has played a fundamental role in my own musicianship ever since. It has not only moved me emotionally and elevated me spiritually, but has also transformed how I think about music.

This quartet in particular was the subject of my master's thesis; it is a meta-quartet, depicting a string quartet in the act of rehearsing a string quartet, the rehearsal itself a microcosm of "human cooperation with its many aspects of feeling and thought." (Carter's words; perhaps this piece is particularly appropriate on election day today, as we finally begin to repair the wounds of a divisive campaign season and look to find ways again of working together.)

I raise a glass this evening to a life well lived. :b:
Thanks for all the rhythms.

Only love
Can make it rain
The way the beach is kissed by the sea.
Only love
Can make it rain
Like the sweat of lovers'
Laying in the fields.

Love, reign o'er me.
Love, reign o'er me, rain on me.

Only love
Can bring the rain
That makes you yearn to the sky.
Only love
Can bring the rain
That falls like tears from on high.

Love Reign O'er me.

On the dry and dusty road
The nights we spend apart alone
I need to get back home to cool cool rain.
I can't sleep and I lay and I think
The nights are hot and black as ink
Oh God, I need a drink of cool cool rain.
