Please consider this APOD submission in memory of my parents. perhaps for 3/23 or around Easter 4/16

here is my image of Abell 30, a born again planetary nebula who's central star re-ignited after turning into a white dwarf,
creating a new system of complex knots of oxygen (blue-green)
inside a mature spherical shell of hydrogen (red) and oxygen:

it took almost 4 years to complete from the light polluted skies of my back yard.

Me, the lover of all blue things, find your picture so interesting! :D

However, the star you have photographed is not HD 93574, which is a modest main sequence star in the constellation of Vela. HD 93574 is a star of spectral type A1V, only about 10 times brighter than the Sun in visual light. We don't expect a star like that to create interesting arc-shaped reflection nebulas, certainly not when it has settled down into main sequence maturity. A star in the process of being born can indeed cause a lot of havoc, but there is no sign of HD 93547 being wracked by birth pangs.

No, your star is HD 53974, also known as FN Canis Majoris. FN CMa is a powerful star of spectral class B0.5IV, a massive star which may be some 5,000 times brighter than the Sun in visual light. FN CMa may be in the beginning of the instability that follows when a star has exhausted its core hydrogen. It makes good sense that such a star would cause an arc that glows blue. The nebula, by the way, is called van den Bergh 95.

More fireworks from FN CMa is sure to follow in the upcoming millennia!

Thanks Ann for taking the time to comment. I knew someone here would have a good explanation for what we see in the image.

Of course me writing it down as HD 93574 is typical of what I do in the early hours of the morning....I totally messed up just transcribing the numbers. It is clearly marked as HD 53974 on the annotated image on my web page. DOH! :-(

Geomagnetic storm in a sphere

On March 16th there was a kp5-6 geomagnetic storm and I finally captured the aurora and its reflection in a glass sphere which was sitting on snow. The scene inside the sphere was of course upside down and I turned it around in post to make it easier for the viewer. I also have the normal version, in case that would needed. Setting this up and really getting the shot in -26C was well worth the frozen toes.
