Circumhorizontal Arc

Post by Tammy » Sun Jul 29, 2007 5:45 am

For consideration as APOD. Taken in Blue Springs, Missouri on July 9 2007. Maybe NASA can also tell me why a cloud with ice particles was so low in the atmosphere on this hot summer day.

Hello Tammy, and welcome to APOD.
This is the other thread about these Fire Rainbows that have been showing up in our sky's for just the past decade or so.

There is also this thread in the Cafe about them too.

You may want to submit it to the Earth Science Picture of the Day too.

Good picture, and a great question too. "Maybe NASA can also tell me why a cloud with ice particles was so low in the atmosphere on this hot summer day. "

Thanks for the Welcome, Craterchains, and for the links to the threads (which I'd already read!) and thanks especially for "seconding" my question!! Sure would appreciate any help in figuring out why in the world these arcs would appear anywhere besides the polar regions, where they belong.

Well now I feel silly. I was just reading about circumhorizontal arcs and realized I had misunderstood where they can be seen. They cannot be seen in the polar regions! Still, this one is way too low.
