I have retired as a commentator here, but I have to say that I am extremely impressed by Rolf Wahl Olsen's portrait of globular clusters in NGC 7252 at 220 million light-years away! :D  Thanks for telling us about these monster globular clusters as well, Rolf! :D

While I'm at it, I must say that I find Derek Santiago's portrait of "The Blue Snowball", planetary nebula NGC 7652, extremely beautiful and wonderfully resolved. Of course it looks very blue! :D

Observing the Moon

This is my first astrophotography with a telescope, having recently returned to astronomy. This shot was taken September 22, 2012 - the International Observe the Moon day. This photo was taken with a Canon 40D through a Celestron C8, and was minimally processed (it appears almost exactly as it was shot, just a minor tweak to brightness). Details of the evening are posted on my blog.

And it's my first image shared here on Starship Asterisk*.

Thank you, Owlice. Glad to be in the game, after watching from the sidelines for many years.

Thanks very much Ann, yes those globulars are true monsters indeed. I'm glad you liked it, I often think these obscure and rarely imaged objects have an interesting story to tell.

Rolf

Loving the lunar images! By comparison, my submission has an orange appearance due to atmospheric haze from wildfires that continue to burn out of control across the mountains outside of Seattle. I hadn't noticed how much until I saw these photos.

I'd better add a note on my submission.

These amazing anticrepuscular rays occured on this morning - 26th September, just 4 days after autumn equinox. So the focus of the rays is almost exactly on the west. Image was taken from Ondřejov, Czech republic (roof of main building of the Astronomical institute of Academy of Sciences), dozens minutes before the sunrise. There is also visible Venus belt in clouds. Used Canon 550D, Samyang 14 mm, f 2,8; ISO 100, 1/40 s. Higher dimension: http://www.astronom.cz/horalek/gallery/ ... podpis.jpg
