APOD: Enceladus in Silhouette (2018 Feb 15)

Post by APOD Robot » Thu Feb 15, 2018 5:05 am

Image Enceladus in Silhouette

Explanation: One of our Solar System's most tantalizing worlds, Enceladus is backlit by the Sun in this Cassini spacecraft image from November 1, 2009. The dramatic illumination reveals the plumes that continuously spew into space from the south pole of Saturn's 500 kilometer diameter moon. Discovered by Cassini in 2005, the icy plumes are likely connected to an ocean beneath the ice shell of Enceladus. They supply material directly to Saturn's outer, tenuous E ring and make the surface of Enceladus as reflective as snow. Across the scene, Saturn's icy rings scatter sunlight toward Cassini's cameras. Beyond the rings, the night side of 80 kilometer diameter moon Pandora is faintly lit by Saturnlight.

The "previous day" link on the current Enceladus page is to
https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap1802014html - which gives a 404 error
The period is missing before the "html"

And there's an extra "0" in the link. It should be https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap180214.html .

I like the picture very much, too. And while Saturn is a fantastic planet, Enceladus is a pretty incredible moon.

You got me wondering, if Enceladus is a pretty incredible moon, what moon would be antithetic to it. The fairly lethargic moon Callisto maybe? The ugly torpid moon Umbriel? The passé Pasiphae?

Perhaps the fully credible Luna

Must be an AWFUL LOT of water to having been doing that for SO LONG....maybe it used to be 600KM Diameter, and has shrunk???

Another great image, Cassini did a great job.
