APOD: Bright Planetary Nebula NGC 7027... (2013 Aug 26)
Re: APOD: Bright Planetary Nebula NGC 7027... (2013 Aug 26)
I think it should be the Casper Nebula for the friendly ghost.
Re: APOD: Bright Planetary Nebula NGC 7027... (2013 Aug 26)
It definitely looks like a Space Pillow. I fully agree with the others.
Pillow should be in the name....
So, how about Oreiller, since Édouard Jean-Marie Stephan is french, and Oreiller means pillow (like a pillow on a bed, not a couch) in french.
Oreiller Nebula
That not only sounds scientific, and is completely appropriate

Hello all,
Love the suggestions! While I like the idea of calling it strictly what it literally looks like, I'd prefer something a little more mystical, such as the planets tend to be named after mythology. I liked Cocoon Nebula, but to change it up
Someone early on had mentioned an Indian or Arabic (?) God named Roc, & I remembered a great fantasy series I had read by Australian author, Sara Douglass, had as characters these demons called TimeKeepers named as listed:
The Timekeeper Demons
Mot ruled dawn, a time of hunger,
Barzula ruled mid-morning, a time of tempest,
Sheol ruled mid-afternoon, a time of despair,
Raspu ruled dusk, a time of pestilence,
Rox ruled night, a time of terror,
Qeteb, was their leader. He ruled Mid-day, a time of destruction, and was considered to be the greatest demon.
It was the Rox/Roc name that inspired me to add these demon names as suggestions, although I still prefer Silk Worm Nebula.
Thanks for the interesting reads!

has a different ring to it, to me.Silk Worm Nebula

My vote is for the Pillow Nebula. It looks like the kind of pillow you'd see in a dream!

Looks a bit like the Massif region in France. And its oversize mass is massive.

The image has streas surround the bright part of the nebula. Are these real or artifacts of the imaging process? If they ar ereal, they suggest comets in the plasma wind that is probably flowing out of this object.

Real, but just cosmic rays. Something like a hair or a speck of dust you see momentarily when watching an old film.brucesalem wrote:The image has streas surround the bright part of the nebula. Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.

A lot of people including myself think this nebula resembles a pillow.

I know I'm replying to an old topic. I call it: the 'Northern Homunculus'. Like the 'Northern Trifid', NGC 1579.

INformal name for MGC7027: Sack of sugar!
Re: APOD: Bright Planetary Nebula NGC 7027... (2013 Aug 26)
This should be called the cerebellum nebula.
Re: APOD: Bright Planetary Nebula NGC 7027... (2013 Aug 26)
Definitely should be named the Cerebellum nebula. It does resemble a cerebellum, and the metaphor for movement is excellent.

I like Sheep's Wool or Cottage Cheese nebula
Re: APOD: Bright Planetary Nebula NGC 7027... (2013 Aug 26)
I would offer “Butterfly Nebula” — a bit poetic, but it’s a pretty nebula!
