NGC 2442 The Meathook Galaxy in Volans
Resembling a sharp implement that a butcher might use, NGC 2442 is a modest sized galaxy in the otherwise somewhat obscure southern constellation of Volans, the Flying Fish.

Tarawera Dreams
Credits: Amit Ashok Kamble
It's such a great feeling when you lay down and gaze at the stars, looking up on the infinite universe and trying to find your place in this universe.
It was one of the most beautiful nights of the year and lake tarawera just added to the beauty of the night sky. The milkyway rising over the lake is a must do if you are around this place. The faint yellow glow over mount tarawera is the moon rising.

Milkyway as seen by artificial intelligence software "DeepDream" from Google
Milkyway as seen by artificial intelligence software "DeepDream" from Google
http://www.ccdsky.eu
Copyright: Christoph Puetz Explanation:
In the past I took this picture from Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) of the milky way. This is an image showing the center of our milky way to the direction of Scorpius and Sagittarius,
composed by 400 frames of 3minutes exposure time and a DSLR with a 24mm lens.
I read these articles of Google's AI Project:
http://googleresearch.blogspot.de/2015/ ... eural.html
http://googleresearch.blogspot.de/2015/ ... izing.html
and I put my image into the DeepDream Software, which I compiled for my Windows platform (it is open source).
It produced this strange result. DeepDream assumes that it can "see" those dog-style features in the sky.
For me it was an interesting example of astrophotografic skills and sophisticated computer science.
Thanks for looking and kind regards,
Christoph

Pink aurora in Lappland
The aurora was so intense that it revealed a pinkish color on its bottom part. This color was easily visible with naked eye.

Wolf-Rayet Nebula NGC 3199

North and east of the Eta Carina nebula is a stellar wind-blown Wolf-Rayet nebula. NGC 3199 takes the classic shape of an OIII-rich crescent that is colored in striking cyan by the HST narrowband palette.

Re: Submissions: 2016 March
I'm not normally a fan of mapped colour narrowband images but this is simply exquisite! You really get an impression of a huge bowshock sweeping across the interstellar medium! The other thing I really like about your image is that it highlights the copious OIII emission. Most other images concentrate more on the Ha element of this wonderful nebula!j.s.ebersole wrote: Wolf-Rayet Nebula NGC 3199
