APOD: Clouds, Birds, Moon, Venus (2018 Mar 04)

Post by APOD Robot » Sun Mar 04, 2018 5:09 am

Image Clouds, Birds, Moon, Venus

Explanation: Sometimes the sky above can become quite a show. In early September of 2010, for example, the Moon and Venus converged, creating quite a sight by itself for sky enthusiasts around the globe. From some locations, though, the sky was even more picturesque. In the featured image taken in Spain, a crescent Moon and the planet Venus, on the far right, were captured during sunset posing against a deep blue sky. In the foreground, dark storm clouds loom across the image bottom, while a white anvil cloud shape appears above. Black specks dot the frame, caused by a flock of birds taking flight. Very soon after this picture was taken, however, the birds passed by, the storm ended, and Venus and the Moon set. Bright Venus is again visible just after sunset this month (2018 March) and will appear quite near Mercury tonight and the rest of this week.

We were taking the dog for an evening walk and noticed two bright lights near the horizon.

It was a nice conjunction

I always find such images as such a waste.. There are so many great photos, so many new ones are being made each day, space is such an incredible place.. And yet a quarter of those "Astronomy" pictures of the day, are night sky, some kind of moon and stuff, a picture any one of as could made..

Hey, I love a little poetry and beauty mixed among the physics and the astrophysics! Don't be a grouch!

The birds in this image reminded me of an anecdote I once read about an observation of the alleged transit of some alleged vulcanoids, sometime around the turn of the 20th century. I don’t have the book immediately at hand to relate the details of the story, but a skeptic had groused about the observer’s “fanciful birds.” The adjective is suspected to have been bowdlerized.

A beautiful photo, to be sure, but if it's so precious or valuable to the photographer to insist on a matermark across the middle of it....well, I'd rather something else was put up.

Probably to protect his intellectual property.

At the request of the astrophotographer, the larger "click through" image has been replaced by one with attribution only in the lower right corner. This refers to the main NASA APOD page. - RJN
