APOD: Twilight in a Flower (2023 May 06)

Post by APOD Robot » Sat May 06, 2023 4:08 am

Image Twilight in a Flower

Explanation: Transformed into the petals of a flower, 16 exposures show the passage of day into night in this creative timelapse skyscape. Start at the top and move counterclockwise to follow consecutive moments as the twilight sky turns an ever darker blue and night blossoms. Each exposure was recorded on the evening of April 22, calculated to maintain a consistent balance of light and color. Close to the western horizon on that date, a crescent Moon and Venus are the two brightest celestial beacons. Petal to petal the pair spiral closer to the flower's center. In silhouette around the center of the twilight flower are Sicily's megalithic rocks of Argimusco.

This APOD shows that blue is in fact no primary hue; it is a range from cyan to violet.
Naturally if you take a blue pigment or, as in this picture, a selecting scattering mechanism that favours blue, and then dilute it, you get pale cyan and eventually white; when you thicken a blue pigment, you get dark violet and eventually black.

There can be exclusions to this rule, when your pigment has a narrow-band spectral feature not resolved by trichromatic observers.
One example is water which is a pigment of cyan-green (=aqua), but has an unresolvable narrow band of high transparency in blue range. When you thicken clear water from 2 meters to 200 meters it goes from cyan-green to dark blue, trespassing from one secondary hue range to another.

So the photos were compressed horizontally in order to fit 12 into 360 degrees. An interesting detail that I didn't quite realize - thanks.

It took some effort and this effort is the combination of past experience on such a technique.
