IC 5332, also known as PGC 71775 is an intermediate spiral galaxy about 30 million light-years away in the constellation Sculptor. IC 5332 is a delicate spiral galaxy that is unusually faint and beautifully symmetrical. As viewed from earth it is nearly face on. It has a very small central bulge and open spiral arms accounting for its classification (SABc). The galaxy lies in the direction of the celestial south pole.

I wanted to highlight the JWST dust lanes more clearly, so I decided to stick to truer color and make the observations red. The result was something a lot more striking, which I like! It’s awesome to see how the dust lane spiral angle and the stellar spiral angle don’t match – not sure why this is.

Copyright: Maurice Toet This is an HαRGB image, using my ZWO ASI294MM mono camera with an Hα filter at F=500mm f/2.8 and my Nikon D810a at F=770mm f/4.3 for RGB (actually one-shot colour). The Hα data, acquired at home (Zoetermeer), and RGB data, acquired in Grandpré, were combined in Astro Pixel Processor. Post-processing was performed in Adobe Photoshop.

The bright red veils are remnants of supernova G 110.3+11.3. VdB (Van den Bergh) 152 is the blue reflection nebula on the 'head' of the brown Bok globule B (Barnard) 175. The small red feature just right of VdB 152 is HH (Herbig Haro) 450, being a jet emitted from a newly forming star. The isolated bright red 'shell' is DeHt (Dengel-Hartl) 5, a dense part of the interstellar medium ionised by a hot white dwarf star.

The galaxy NGC 6946, also known as the Fireworks Galaxy due to the large number of supernovae discovered within it, is a beautiful spiral galaxy located about 10 million light-years away. Nearby, but only apparently, there is a cluster of stars: NGC 6939. In reality, this object is part of our galaxy and it is enormously closer, at only 3800 light-years from us. This area of sky, between the constellations of Cepheus and Swan, lies in the galactic plane. Because of this, both objects are immersed in a faint dust nebula; in fact, the sky background of much of the image appears gray and not perfectly dark
