In the very early hours of June 19, clear skies over Scotland coincided with an extensive display of Noctilucent (night-shining) Clouds: the best I've seen in years.

I want to thank Terry Hancock for his brilliant picture, "Witch Hunt for Orion". The Witch Head Nebula (at upper left) is really striking, but the entire image is extremely rich and deep. One aspect that I wasn't aware of is the blue reflection nebulosity that can be seen stretching mostly vertically along much of the center of the image. Realistically, this blue reflection nebulosity should be the work of Rigel, which produces huge amounts of blue light but not enough ultraviolet light to cause noticeable ionization. B1+B2 star Eta Orionis, which is much hotter than Rigel but probably not hot enough to do
much ionization, seems to sit smack in the middle of the blue filaments and may also contribute to the reflection nebula. (Rigel and Eta Orionis display almost identical parallaxes and should be located at comparable distances from us and perhaps from the bluish dust clouds.) Well, fascinating!
I also want to thank Eric Coles for his beautiful picture of "the fireworks galaxy", NGC 6946, and the seemingly (but of course not really) nearby cluster NGC 6939. The portrait of NGC 6956 underscores the overall reddening of this galaxy, as we see it through a veil of Milky Way stars and dust, but we can also see the galaxy's dust lanes and spiral arms, brimming with pink emission nebulas. It is fascinating to see the large, smooth, faint, slightly grayish, partly spiral-shaped disk that seems to underlie it all.
I also love the portrait of NGC 6939. I can't remember seeing another picture of this cluster that so skillfully brings out the individual colors of the constituent stars. The blue stars, given their relative faintness, ought to be A- and F-type stars.

I love this wide-angle portrait of the Tadpole Galaxy and friends! There are two spiral galaxies and an elliptical galaxy at what appears to be the same distance from us as the Tadpole Galaxy, so they may belong to the same "Local Group". The bright blue foreground star is HD 145223, a star of spectral class A2.

JUPITER AND ITS MOON EUROPA. STUDY WITH METHANE
Image realized with methane filter, we show the levels of sunlight being absorbed by the methane next to the atmosphere of Jupiter. Note also the presence of the moon Europa, highlighted by methane (visible in this photo only with the filter).
The clearest areas are higher in altitude, containing little or no methane, besides the Europa moon. While the darker regions are rich in methane, it strongly absorbs sunlight at that wavelength becoming darker.
