Perhaps I should make a lot of irrelevant, nonsensical posts to pad my post count.

I've been busy with other things leaving me little time to devote here. I am happy to see that MargaritaMc and others have been posting news articles in my absence.

I write a lot of relevant, sensical, even original posts to pad my post count
(e.g., http://asterisk.apod.com/viewtopic.php? ... 14#p220114 )
but no one seems to ever respond to them.

Then you shouldn't be bothered if some pathetic retiree actually passes you in some silly number count.
bystander wrote:

I have, of late, been reprimanded for "posting whole articles which don't carry a license that permits it."

That seems fair enough but I haven't the patience to search for such licenses
nor to simply post a bunch of links that I'm quite sure will be ignored...
so best of luck to MargaritaMc.

You did put a lot of work into that post. You went too far, though. If you are communicating with calculus then you have eliminated virtually everyone who might want to respond to you. This forum is too casual for that. Beyond can't even make a joke with all that Greek in there.

Margarita has also posted whole articles and has since trimmed them to only a paragraphs or two after it was noticed. Heck, I've probably done it in the past, too. Bad habits... the good news is, you can actually be lazier by just copying one paragraph and not bother doing any formatting.

I don't know how others respond, of course, but I'm much more likely to click one of Margarita's links than I am to wade through the vast collections of info you post, Art, searching for the tiny nugget of relevancy.

I'm far from one thousand posts, and don't know if I'll reach that lofty level lowly depth of insanity, but this thread seemed like the right place to thank whoever came up with my new monicker. "Don't bring me down" is cool, and way better than The Riddler, which is what I was afraid I was going to get stuck with. I do try to stay upbeat, even though the world is circling the drain.

“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."
"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, or you wouldn’t have come here.”

A common mondegreen in the song is the perception that, following the title line, Lynne shouts "Bruce!". According to the liner notes of the ELO compilation Flashback, he is saying a made-up lyric, "Grroosss," which some have suggested sounds like the Bavarian expression "Grüß Gott." After the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows.

Does not quality trump quantity? Suppose you multiply each post by a number between 0-100 suggesting an arbitrary qualitative judgement, then add them up. I imagine Dr. Neufer would remain near the top, what about the rest?

That's good for me, as I don't get along well with metrics.

I might want to see the quality scale.

To me, a question can be easily as valuable as an answer, because questions frequently trigger long discussions, which have a good chance of generating all sorts of interesting stuff.

A correct answer made deliberately obscure, as when cast in a riddle of pop culture references, has less value to me. But a good and original joke is almost always valuable.

In terms of raw post count, however, I have an advantage of having my time zone almost all to myself. This leads me to answer my own questions from time to time, and to laugh at my own bad jokes. This possibly makes me appear more insane than I actually am.

(But thanks for the sentiment, Bruce.)

Metric: "a mathematical function that associates a real nonnegative number analogous to distance with each pair of elements in a set such that the number is zero only if the two elements are identical, the number is the same regardless of the order in which the two elements are taken, and the number associated with one pair of elements plus that associated with one member of the pair and a third element is equal to or greater than the number associated with the other member of the pair and the third element" -merriam-webster.com

No wonder nobody has yet to master the English language. That sentence ranks right up there with the ancient Germanic dialect used in the Voynich Manuscript (it's plaintext, not a cipher, just an obscure language most linguists rarely encounter), or Beowulf.

[Lessee, that's 2. Oh, boy, I'll reach a thousand posts in no time at this rate!]
